Firmware Version 1.2.0 addresses the following phenomenon.

If pressure is applied to the lens barrel while the lens is mounted to the camera (pressure can be applied even while attaching the lens cap or while carrying the camera with the lens attached in a bag), the autofocusing function of the lens may stop working.

Download it from Canon's Drivers And Software page.

Firmware Version 1.2.0 is for lenses with Firmware Version 1.1.0. If the lens' firmware is already Version 1.2.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

The lenses with the following serial numbers are equipped with Firmware Version 1.1.0:
The third digit in the serial number is either 0, 1, or 2 (xx0xxxxxxx, xx1xxxxxxx, or xx2xxxxxxx).
Lenses with serial numbers other than those listed above are equipped with Firmware Version 1.2.0.

Cameras that can be used for the firmware update:
Canon EOS-1D X, Canon EOS 5D Mark III (with v1.1.3 or later), or Canon REBEL T4i/650D.
 
Sounds like quite a few people are having problems with this FW update over on CanonRumors forum so it might be worth holding fire for a day or 2.
 
Not sure if the list of cameras will increase but sounds odd that the update can't be used on all models (at least the current ones!) or is that a technicality that the lower 1100D model cannot apply lens firmware updates via it's own camera firmware?

I've heard a few people are having problems with the firmware update for the lens, but if the cameras firmware is up to date it seems to work ok. I've just re tried the 40mm on my 5D3 and even though the 3rd digit is a 2 it works fine on the camera and on the wifes 650D. Not tried it on my 60D though so I don't know about that, but both of the other 2 bodies have up to date firmware.
 
So, if you do not have any of the following cameras, Canon EOS-1D X, Canon EOS 5D Mark III (with v1.1.3 or later), or Canon REBEL T4i/650D - you need to take the lens to a Canon Service Centre to have the firmware updated - which is a little bit inconvenient......:|
 
Or speak to your friendly Canon dealer that you have been buying your gear from lately and ask if they have a demo body that they would mind you using to update the firmware.

Although if you have been buying exclusively off the net for a while, you might have difficulty with this!

Or you test your lens to see if it is even an issue before worrying about it.

My serial number would suggest firmware 1.1.0 but mine does not have the issue.
