Canon EF 40mm F/2.8 STM Lens - Views on how it performs on APS-C cameras?

I'm thinking of getting the Canon EF 40mm F/2.8 STM Lens for my 60D.

Any views on how it performs on a crop sensor camera? I have the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM which I love but the idea of having something so small and lightweight to take out instead, on occasion, really appeals.

How will it compare quality wise to my zoom at the same focal distance?

Thanks! :)

Quality wise you will be hard pushed to tell a difference at normal print sizes especially stepped down as both a good quality lenses. 40mm is a bit long on a crop for me for general use and if going for a prime I'd always want it to be faster than my zoom at the same length.

I've never seen the point of non macro primes of f2.8 or smaller unless they're very cheap or very compact as you can get a good quality 17-50mm f2.8 zoom like the Tamron which isn't exactly a behemoth.

Personally I'd go for a nice compact f1.8 somewhere between 28 and 50mm or get a nice compact f2.8 macro.

Have you seen the EF 40 ?

It couldn't be any more compact or light and it is around £100 odd so cheap too.
The IQ is also very good from the lens which is the main point...

I got one when they first came out. I was never happy with my 50 f/1.4 unless it was stopped down a bit (mainly outdoors really).
I also needed something smaller so it would fit in my suit bag attached to my 60D.
I really like this lens, its very sharp, even wide open, and seems to be quite flare resistant. Its the only lens i have that doesn't have a hood.

One of the best features of this lens for me is the minimum focusing distance. Ive struggled in the past to shoot people at the same table as we (restaurants, pubs etc) with my 50mm primes, the 40mm focuses just that bit closer to make it more usable on nights out (again, size comes in to play as well).

have to agree with all that's been said here ,its a great little lens ,and its turned my 5dmk111 into a carry everyware point and shoot :D. ive just updated the firmware on the lens and I think it focus's faster now (even though this isn't what the firmware was for)

£100?
Cheap?
Are You MAD?
:D

I am not mad, my mother had me tested.

In terms of lens I would say £100 is pretty near the bottom of the price range. I had a 40 STM for a while and it was a very good lens, actually looks too small and makes a DSLR look a it odd proportionately.

I loved it on my 60d. Quality is surprisingly good. Fantastically small. Great focal length on APS-C (a personal thing I know). Pretty good AF. Not great MF, the focus control lacks feel due to being fly-by-wire.

Overall fantastic value, and makes for a very portable walk around system.

As said, good lens but manual focus is a bit meh. There's a firmware update available for a bug that causes the zoom to get stuck sometimes but other than that it's an awesome tiny lens :)
