Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens.

I was in Jessops the other day exploring lens options and they mentioned it was a new version (their Canon rep was very excited about it). I thought nothing of it. Now I'm in a position to take the plunge I've drawn a blank researching this new version online. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Was it the new 50mm F1.8 STM version by mistake ?

Pop back to the store / phone them and ask ?

I've never really been impressed with the knowledge of the Jessops staff. In the one at the metro centre they reckoned the tokina 11-16 was discontinued and that i couldnt get one anywhere, even though it isn't and was for sale at lots of other places, and they had 2 in stock which I pointed out to them. They also advised me over the phone that they stocked LEE filters but after a 35 min drive i found out that they don't stock them and never have. When i questioned them about it they denied any knowledge of a phone call prior to visiting.

I have a canon 50mm 1.4 and its ok, sometimes focus is a little hit and miss but most of the time its fine and its pretty sharp. I never use it below f1.8 as its a bit soft but stopped down a bit its razor sharp. If i could afford it I'd get a sigma ART 50mm but for the amount of use it gets the canon one is fine :)

100% the f1.4. Priced at £244. They were all raving about it. Bizarre.

They said the same to me about the Tonika whenI spoke to them! :)

The Sigma ART is out of my budget unfortunately. I was really impressed with the 50mm Canon when I had a play, but thanks for yiur info.

These were both taken with the canon 50mm on my 6D and both are pretty sharp :)
The waterfall one is at f16 and the one of my daughter is at f1.8

If I can get anything near to this I'll be over the moon. Lovely shots. :ty:

There is no new Canon 50 F1.4 lens - it's the same lens as released in June 1993.

there is a replacement for the tokina 11-16 coming the 11-20mm but not one hundred persent sure the older lens has been dropped

They look the same to me. One's missing its end cap and you can see the mount but other than that I think it's the same thing.
I can see a difference - the Jessops one has the normal gold USM ring and says 'ultrasonic' to the right side, whereas the bottom one has a silver USM ring and rather than saying 'ultrasonic' it has the macro mfd written on the side?

Is this a new lens or simply updated markings on the old one I wonder?? (I do suspect the former however!)

Bingo. I've been to both stores and they look different as 'odd jim' mentioned.

The gold one is the one on the Canon website too. So it's either a new lens or updated markings I'd say.

I've e-mailed Cannon for a clarification. Watch this space :)

They would've put out a press release if the design changed. New markings only imo.

... and they would've charged more for it.

I'm inclined to agree, it's not advertised anywhere like the new 1.8 lens. I'm guessing older style markings and photo's which haven't been updated.

I received a response from Canon too. Useless.
