Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS II USM as 'insect' lens

I bought this lens as my new Sigma 150-600 will not focus close enough for insects and my Canon 18-135 will not produce a large enough image without getting so close to insects that they fly away. So far I am very impressed with it.

These insects were feeding on thistle flowers on Lindesfarne last week - I have no idea what they are but am very glad they do not suck blood.

The images may not be 'pin sharp' (the full size images are better on my iMac) but for a first use of the lens I am very happy.

Not bad for a first try with the lens.

You could try using a set of extension tubes which will give you larger images without getting too close.

Extension tubes could get you closer but you would lose infinity focus if anything tasty flew over birdwise. You might also want to try focus stacking to give you a larger DOF
