Although an extension tube will give you a slight increase in magnification they are mainly used to reduce the minimum focus distance of a lens thus allowing you to get nearer to the subject.
 
An EF12 will give you 0.27-0.15x mag from a minimum focus distance 498mm out to 723mm with the lens set to inifinity. Figures for an EF25 are 0.44-0.32x between 368mm and 428mm.
Native magnification is 0.13x at 825mm MFD

Bob - a lot of that sounds like foreign language to me. Do you mean that with a 12mm extender, the 85mm minimum focussing distance becomes 498mm, i.e. 50cm? that should be enough actually, and I quite like the compactness of the kenko 12mm :thumbs:

You've got it. Why not just get a set of Kenkos and then you'll have everything covered right down to approaching 1:1 (guess)?

If you only want to go a bit closer, close up lenses are a very handy option. Canon's D500 (+2 diopters) is a nice quality doublet, or a simple Hoya +2 would probably be fine for the odd flower or whatever.

Edit: crossed post! The Canon ones are much stronger. Kenkos are fine but I wouldn't hang a 600mm off the end.
