Just took delivery of this lens after ordering it on wednesday... just took a few test photos and even just basically taking snapshots you can see that there is absolutely no comparison whatsoever between this and the kit lens! Very happy with it and thanks to 'pooley' for suggesting it!

Off to ASI on Sat so hope to get some good shots, will post them up!

The lens that spends more time on my camera than any other. I adore this lens and its the one that gets used most for wedding shoots etc. so many 'L' series snobs look down there nose at it but the only thing stopping this being designated L is the fact its an EF-S series. Its quite possibly the reason i still have an AP-s crop body and haven't gone Full Frame yet. Enjoy. :thumbs:

Cheers Gary, I was swaying towards the 14-40mm L f/4.0 but then I am upgrading to a 7D soon so not much point until I go full frame :)
 
excellent lens, it's the EF-S version of 24-70 f2.8 but with IS! so it's sure an excellent choice. I there's a similar lens for full frame.

17-40 f4 L is an okay lens, but only for ultra-wide angle on full frame. it's actually a pretty terrible lens for crop sensor: its range is limited and it doesn't have IS at f4.

Very happy I didn't get caught up in the whole red ring around the end then! Very happy with the lens, so happy I'm off to see if I can get any good shots today, although light isn't exactly great and its foggy!
 
THE best walkabout lens for a Canon crop by far. This and my 70-300L are my two favorite lenses on a 7D, and I have owned a lot of nice lenses.

edit: My 17-55 replaced a 24-105L, and my 70-300L replaced both my 70-200 F/4 IS L & 100-400L.

I love this lens... absolutely brilliant piece of kit. Sadly I'm going to have to sell mine as going FF soon and it's going to be a big miss!

I would highly recommend the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 to go with it as this is possibly even better and gives you a really great combination of focal ranges to work with. I have the non IS version and it's a real thing a beauty! The IS version is somewhat more expensive and probably not necessary for most people.

Enjoy your new lens... I have no doubt you will! :)

And it's also not weather sealed :bonk:

I have one and agree with others, it is a bit of a dust bunny magnet though, I probably take the front element off once a year to give it a clean out :geek:

I have been using SLRs for 35 years and have used lenses both cheap and expensive and i have yet to see one single piece of dust in a lens show up on a photo. Dust on the sensor? Now thats a different matter all together.
I certainly would not be dismantling a precision optic in order to remove what can only be tiny motes of dust. If its bad enough to affect your photos then you have a serious issue either with the lens or the environment you're shooting in.
Weather sealing? Mmm, jury is out on whether that makes any difference to the majority of photographers, not saying its not a good thing, it would be nice if all lenses were built to the standards of L series, i just dont think its as important as some think it is.
I have L and non L lenses and weather sealing hasn't made a blind bit of difference to my shooting ever.

The 7D certainly is weather sealed, but how weather sealed I hope never to discover.
 
An official quote from Canon on a query re. the 7D (read the bit "For the conditions you described." LOL under a shower and being immersed ! Yeah weather sealings going to help that...NOT)

To clarify, none of our cameras or lenses should be immersed under
water. The EOS 1 series cameras and certain L series lenses do offer
weather seals. These seals do not make the equipment water resistant or
water proof. You should always try to keep the equipment dry.

For the conditions you described (hard rain, under a shower, and being
immersed), you should be looking into an underwater housing. There are
several third party companies that offer underwater housings for our
cameras.

Canon will not even entertain a warranty issue with water ingress on 1 series camera. The weather sealing is of limited use tbh unless you are continually working for lengthy periods in dusty or high humidity environments.

Never missed a shot or had a camera or lens fail because of the 'Weather' Millions of cameras are taking Billions of pictures every year in all conditions with no problems whatsoever. We need to get over this hysterical BS that gets thrown out there so often that the hype gets believed. Exactly the sort of tosh that makes people buy oversized 4x4s that are never more off road than bumping onto a kerb. Get over it.
 
I thought L lenses where all weather sealed so stand corrected :)

Re the dust I never said it effected an other wise brilliant lens it just bugs me and easy to do, here's a vid, but do at your own risk etc etc, I think I've done it twice now :)
 
Wow Steve, i think i will give that a miss. My nerves were shredded just watching that screwdriver tip near that element. One slip and the dust speck would seem very minor. Ouch!!! :-)
