It is an ok general purpose/walk_around lens.
I used one, a lot, for 2 years before I went full frame.
It meets my needs for web publishing and prints up to A4 (10x8)
Autofocus is is a step up (subjectively) from other kit lenses but probably not as quick as some L lenses.
Have you seen this review (it is not a manufacturers review)? it says it all.

I thought this would be the perfect lens for me but it started to wind me up so I sold it back when I first got my 40D.
on paper it seems pretty good, and useful, but I found it too compromised.
in portraits you're at f5.6 so not as handy as a nice f2.8 at 50mm imho
and at 17mm, there is a lot of barrel distortion.
He's an example I keep coming back to from a few years ago when I owned one.
