Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM vs Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

Hi,

I have a Canon 5D and a bunch of Canon lenses (more than I certainly should :D ).
I just got a cheap 40D that I intend to put in the car just to have it when I need it and I'd like it to be as small as possible.

My Canon 40mm 2.8 is fine, but is a bit tight very often, so I'd like a wider lens.
The 24mm 2.8 STM fits the bill, but the Tamron may be a better all-round lens (a bit more expensive, though).

I never used either of them, so I cannot know about their performance.
Regarding IQ and focus, what would be better?

I want a small but good quality lens to go with the 40D. It's also important to be cheap, because I intend to have it in the car most of the time and I don't want to worry about it bumping or getting hot in the summer or something like that.

My initial choices would be something like a 17-50 2.8 or a prime around 24-35mm. I have no problem going second hand.
My budget is around £100.

I already have a 17-40, but that's not 2.8 and, mainly, it is not small or cheap and I don't feel comfortable leaving it in the car.
I also have a 28 1.8, but that's not cheap also (at least for me). :\

So, what would you do?
Should I look for a 24 2.8 STM (cheap, very small and excellent image quality)?
Should I just use one I already have?

My resistance in using what I already have is because my 5D (which was calibrated by Canon for all my lenses a few years ago) performs admirably!
It's so good that I think I'll never let it go and I don't feel the need to replace it. So, I tend to preserve it as far as I can. ;)

Am I being pitty?

The 24mm F2.8 STM is nice :) 24mm is wide enough for quite a lot and if you want small then there's not much else smaller!

I have the 24mm STM and I don't use it as much as I could since I also have the 18-35mm STM but I still make a point of using it now and then.

Would you consider selling yours, since you don't use it much?
 
Not really looking to sell it because it's a handy lens if you want to travel as light as possible with body + 1 lens :)

The camera + lens even fits in my jacket pocket (it's a big pocket but still!). Pretty good going for a 7d2 + lens

It's a shame the 24mm STM is EF-S only :/

Yes, it is.

What do you think about it's image quality?
I feel the 40mm is way better on the 5D than on the 40D.
 
Yeah I had the 40mm STM too when it first came out but it was a bit tight for what I use on a crop body so I ended up selling it. 24mm is a much more flexible focal length on an APS-C sensor!

Quality wise it's pretty damn good I guess :) There's sharper 24mm lenses but not with the same combination of price/size/IQ so I guess it depends on what you're after.

Not sure there will be many around to be honest since they only came out in November/December :) Also since they're EF-S only, I guess that cuts down the number of potential owners.

By how much - really? Bearing in mind most cameras aren't bought by people who hang around gear forums being told they have to have FF or they're wasting their time.

There are no stats to split FF from crop DSLR sales (that I can find), but crop only lenses outsell FF lenses 3:1 and given that FF lenses also fit crop cameras I wouldn't be surprised if we were looking at 10:1 for cameras.

Yeah I guess I didn't think of it like that although I'm sure those top selling lenses are probably zooms. I guess I'm just going by the lack of attention that this lens has received compared to it's 40mm relative :) I've hardly seen anyone discussing the 24mm lens but the 40 is generally quite popular.

Maybe it's just me :|
