Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS?

You really can't go wrong at that price, I see used ones for sale for more than that.
You'd be hard pushed to find a better lens for so little money, in fact, I'd say you won't find one.
You will find 250mm a little short for wildlife though. ;)

Yes the Canon 55-250IS is a belter of a lens for the price.

Camerapricebuster is a good site to check for pricing.

There is a mark II out not, but there is no difference to the optics or IS system, just a cosmetic upgrade, so if you can get the mark I at a good price, def go for it.

When I say wildlife I don't mean national park distance, I mean the other side of my local canal distance :lol: About 200m?
 
200m? That's a heck of a long way for a 250mm lens!
They're good but not that good! :lol:
It's just over £100 so my suggestion is to get it anyway then if you find you want longer, start saving for something seriously long. ;)

Okay, sounds like a good plan. I think 200m was a bit over exaggerated anyway, the canal is only about 50m wide :lol:
 
Even 50m means you'll be using it at it's full 250mm and will probably have to crop heavily but it's workable.
You'll be really pleased with the lens even if it's not quite long enough for some situations, the image quality is really good. :thumbs:

or looking at it another way an ebay trader who's had 13 negs in the last month and 103 in the last year (and 26/ 263 neutrals in the same time), personally I reckon those top seller things don't mean much and I wont trade with anyone who's got more than 1 or 2 negs

but its your money , use who you like - but dont be suprised if it all goes tits up - and use a credit card and paypal to pay for it just in case (also its almost certainly a grey import - so bear in mind that you probably won't be able to get canon uk to honor the warranty)

There are a couple of these in the classifieds, i know because i'll be after one too, for the money i don't think you will get anything better, reviews are good, canon users say the same.

but it is only 137 at amazon. that extra 20 quids buy you peace of mind. why risk it.
 
It's definitely a cracking lens. I only had mine a few weeks before the wife borrowed it and I never seem to get a chance to get it back now. She swears by it for wildlife in the local park (about 10-15m) and gets some great results with it. If I wasn't saving for a 70-200 2.8 L IS I'd probably get another one for my 7D.
 
I would get it off amazon for the extra piece of mind, the high ratings of some ebay sellers do not mean anything. Recently my partner bought some make up off someone with very good feedback, but when it arrived she could tell it was fake as she has worked in that line of work, to most people they probably wouldnt be able to tell.

Just be very carefull of buying it off ebay, I'd prefer to spend a few quid more and get it from some where reputable
 
Despite all the pointers towards Amazon, I'll be buying it off eBay. I've been using it since 2007 and yeah, I have had a few problems along the way but they can be resolved easily because of the eBay Buyer Protection. I even bought my camera from an eBay seller, used. And that's in perfect shape, as described. :)
 
like i said , your money your choice - and if it all goes pear shaped we won't be rolling arround laughing and saying we told you so , because we are bigger than that ;)
 
Just my own opinion but i wouldn't buy anything that costs allot from of flebay as the feedback thats left is only as good as the day they leave it....

lets say you buy that lens & a week after you've been more than happy with it.. so you go leave him good feeback... but then you have problems a week later & the guy wants nothing to do with you... well you cant go back & change your feedback to let others know as its too late... so for me the feedback system is a waste of time..

flebay is ok for things that only cost a few quid or half the price than anywhere else then it might be worth the gamble.. but when you'r only talking a few quid difference id buy from a shop or amazon.....
 
Like Josh I am a long time E-Bay user (2005), bought all my film cameras from there F1, A1, T90 plus around 30 FD lenses all in excellent condition and working perfectly, never a problem.

I bought my 55-250 from E-Bay when it first came out, good price and fast delivery.

In 7 years I have never had to leave negative feedback,and I have bought over 150 items in that time ,some costing over £130.00.

Maybe I have been lucky, but I'll wager that there are many more satifactory transactions on that site than the suspect ones we hear about.

I agree to an extent - I've bought loads of stuff off ebay too with no problem - but how many of your purchases were from someone with 103 negs and 263 neutrals ?

Personally I'm fine with buying all sorts of stuff off ebay - even pricey kit - but I try to trade with people with 100% feedback - though i'll forgive one or two negs if they seem to be given for stupid stuff

but would i send 100 quid to someone with 103 negs for a lens thats almost certainly a grey import.... not even if hell freezes over.
 
Maybe Talkphotography should have a big banner stating what a great lens this is go buy it! Maybe that would eliminate the plethora of repetitive threads asking just this question!

I got my 55-250mm & 50mm from digigood last year, delivered in two days, I can highly recommend them :thumbs:
