Is this lens any good for portraits?

whether it be 1 person up close or say 4 people from a small distance?

You could also consider the cheaper 50mm f2.5 or f1.4 or the slightly more expensive Siggy 50mm f1.4. All of these are EF fit rather than the EF-S of the 60mm, if that matters.

Yup, all worth considering.

Also I've used an EF-S 60mm a couple of times and it is nice for portraits, although you might need a bit of distance to get 4 people in shot.

I'm probably going to sound stupid again now...... but what is the different between EF and EF-S?

EF will fit an APS-C or a full frame camera. EF-S will only fit APS-C cameras, like the 400D / 7D etc.

It's just the size of the chip and the lens mount.

Cameras like yours (and mine) will accept EF-S or EF fit lenses. Other cameras like the 5D and 1D will only accept EF lenses and will not accept EF-S lenses.

The advantage of buying EF fit lenses is that you can use them on your own camera or on a Canon full frame camera like the 5D or even a Canon 35mm film camera.

PS. There are disadvantages to using EF lenses... they could well be bigger and heavier than EF-S lenses and they sometimes cost more.
