I found it a great improvement on my old 450d, better reach, IS (I had the earlier kit lens without IS) and felt a lot better built.

17-85mm is much better than 18-55 (well, anything is...).
A better choice would be something like Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. xx-85mm are slow lenses that need good light or tripod.

Are you kidding about the 18-55?
If it's the IS version we are talking about then believe me, it's a cracking lens and gives ANY standard lens a run for the money
I own a good sharp copy of the 17-55 2.8 which is highly praised for its optics
I've done loads of AB tests with the 18-55 IS and there's not a lot in it barring construction and aperture.

The IS version of the kit lens is great for the price...
Probably better than the 17-85 apart from the range...
Best 2 lenses for crop are:-
15-85 for range and IQ
17-55 for speed and IQ
Never been a Tamron fan and 17-50 is pretty short for a walkabout...
