Canon EFS 60mm F2.8 Macro USM

HI everybody

I just wanted to know if this is a good lens?
Is there many people on here which has this lens?
I have just received one of these for christmas and I dont know wether to keep it or return it. Reason is I have never gone into Macro photography before so it might just end it as a waste.

If people want to do Macro photography, then will you say this is a good lens for it? or is there a better one for the money -/+ from this price?

1 last favour.... if there are anyone who is using this lens then can you please show me some pics of what sort of result I can achieve with this lens :)

By all accounts the 60mm is a good macro lens. The only disadvantage it may have when compared to macro lenses with a longer focal length is that the working distance is a bit short. This is okay for static subjects like flowers, but may be a problem with subjects like insects, which might be frightened away as you close in on them to take a photograph.

Remember too that a macro lens can be used for normal photography too. You don't say what camera you have, but if it's a crop camera, the 60mm is a nice focal length for portrait photography.
 
I had a 60 when I was on a cropped body, fantastically sharp and it made a great portrait lens.

Working distance is the only real draw back for bugs and stuff.
 
Sorry. I have a Canon 400D. I dont know what you mean by cropped body.

Ummm as you may tell I am a newbie to photography. I tried to take a few pics on F2.8 and alot of the picture is blurry. I had to make the F to comething like F20 before the rest of the image is sharp. so can anyone tell me what the 2.8 is actually good for? Surely 2.8 is too low for most photos..

had the lens on a 40D and while it was
light and sharp I never liked the working distance which could cause shadow problems never mind scaring insects. I'd go with a longer focal length

Jackwow, thats not really very helpful is it. Where's your Christmas spirit?

The OP has stated he's very much a newbie to photography.

ep82, the smaller the F number the shallower the depth of field. The lovely blur is considered by some to be the finest part of the image. Might I suggest you take a few hours to look around the excellent resource that is TP and read up on depth of field, apertures and their relationship with each other. Your understanding of Photography will become a bit clearer.

Your 400D uses a sensor that's smaller than a 35mm frame, there is a factor of 1.6x to consider. Some other cameras are 1.5x and some are full frame.

EF-S 60 is a superb macro lens. It's good for portraits too, but you've probably got another lens that could do that. If you're not into macro, then, reading between the lines of your post, that lens is perhaps not for you right now. Macro is quite a specialised area with its own set of issues and knowledge which you need to read up on.

And there are other ways of doing pretty good close ups very cheaply, like a Raynox DCR-250 adapter lens for £35 off Amazon. Fine for flowers and stuff.
 
Thanks for the reply everyone. I might give it a shot. I might end up loving Macro photography. And sorry for not understanding the techincal side of things compare to most of you.

Andywest. Those pictures looks great. do you happen to have anymore? maybe not of flowers? I want to see what it can do besides flowers and plants :)

Sadly not of anything else. I sold the lens to buy god only knows what but it's only when i look back i realise what a cracking lens it was. My Dad has the Canon 100mm f2.8 and he really likes it.
