Well I have had a reply from Canon about my faulty 5 d ... just have to wait and see what happens , but Aaron doesn't fill me with confidence when he tells me to pack my Lens securely ..... ..... Bl**dy hell ..
Good will gesture , the Camera is 2 years old and looks like new ... 2 years is not fit for purpose , i hope they know unless it is negligence on my part i have up to 6 years .. :rules:

copy of email below

As we are yet to see the camera, I cannot comment specifically on the root cause of the fault, and therefore could not even speculate as to possible resolution. I would advise you to send through the camera to the Canon RCC where a technician can inspect it, and any decisions concerning goodwill gestures will be made.

Please can you package the lens as securely as possible, including a proof of purchase, a description of the fault and you own return contact details. This will then need to be sent to:

Canon UK
Unit 130
Centennial Park
Elstree
Hertfordshire
WD6 3SE

Kind regards,

Aaron Edgeworth

I would not worry at this stage. I am quite sure Canon will have been burnt in the past by agreeing to repairs and then found out when they eventually see the camera that the damage was caused by user negligence. Do as he said and pack the item well and I am sure you will be ok.

Don't go spouting consumer law too early. The guys the other end are only human, you will get their backs up

Hi Stew

i'm not going to m8 .. all packed and a nice letter inside  ..
Just i know how p.c world tried it on ... Company's today try and get away with as much as they can .. and some simply don't know the law .. i just hope Canon come up trumps and repay the faith i show them by owning 10k worth of their kit ..

once i get it back i'm going to sell it and get a 5d mk 2

rog

Don't canon by law have no obligation to you anyway.
Consumer goods act is between you and the retailer.
The 6 years is not a statement of how long it should last, but a statement of the maximum time after finding the fault that you are allowed to bring a case against the other party in the contract.

In addition - AFAIK - after 6 months the onus is on you to prove that the fault was inherent to the equipment from manufacture - not easy....

Good luck though. I have just returned my 40d to Canon with the Err99 issue. It is 5 weeks outside the 1 year warranty period and they have said that unless there is obvious damage they will treat it under warranty.

Hopefully with a pro-level camera they will be decent about it.

Best not getting shirty until Canon have had a chance to respond:). They fixed my HF100 camcorder without any questions 6 weeks after the warranty expired.

Fingers crossed with for us both m8

Well p.c world said about a laptop fault after 34 days it was nothing to do with them and we had to send it to dell .. As jessops will just send it back to canon i'll cut out the middle man .. And as Canon asked me to send it to them then they have accepted responsibility .. I had an issue with p.c world and dell replaced a £300 laptop with a £700 one because of the hassle ..

to say with a 1 year warranty you only get 6 months is completely wrong .. the onus is on them .. for at least 2 years and even up to 6 years .. although after that time it does get hard and might have to go to small claims ..

Absolutely right it's with the retailer. Definition in SoG Act is along the lines of that your rights against the trader last up to 6 years, depending on how long a reasonable person would expect the goods to last. TBH a reasonable person would expect a £2000 camera to last the full six years, IMO.

I think it depends on usage and conditions it's exposed to. Taking it out in storms/desert etc and using it for 1000s of shots a day is different to someone taking it out twice a week for 200 shots or so

i think that is reasonable .. who can afford to replace camera gear at that price every 2 years ..

I'm sure Canon will sort it .. lets face it with mirror's falling of the 5d the last thing they want is more bad publicity :nono: ..
they might just send me a mk 2 :D ..

i have 2 5d's so they get shared use .. so it is on around 6000 i think .. As for storm and desert .... light rain and not even been near a beach

That's absolutely true. There is always a difference between fair wear and tear and a defect.

The 6 year period does not mean the product should last that long, the product only has to last a reasonable amount of time. 6 years refers to the limit for bringing a court case in england.

With canon being such a large company and the camera being what it is, i can't see them kicking up a fuss unless they find something to thats shows signs of misuse!
