Canon Eos 1000D or Eos 450D

Hi I am looking to get into photography and I seek your advice, I am not sure whether to purchase the Canon Eos 1000D or Eos 450D, I can get the 1000D for £305 and the 450D for £395, £90 difference what are your opinions are there any major differences that make one camera alot better than the other and is it worth the extra £90?

The 1000D although good for the money is Canon's "Bargain Basement" entry level camera, the 450D is a better camera overal :)

Why not consider a used 40D? you can pick them up used and in good condition for £350-£400 which is a bargain considering the build quality.
 
I would deff go with the 450. i have had one and it's a great camera. well worth the £90 investment. If you bought the 1000D you will be kicking yourself for not buying the 450D in the 1st place! Remember always get the best you can afford. :thumbs:

Good point!! There are quite a few about at the moment as people are upgrading to the 7D.
 
Thanks for all the advice so far guys, I don't really want to buy second hand I'd rather have something new with warrenty (because I always end up breaking things) At the moment I am leaning towards the 450D, are there any major differences in spec? Are the lenses the same?
 
I would also suggest a used 40D. If you did want to buy new, then the 450D.
 
Yes the lenses are the same, or same type I should say. Whatever fits the 1000d will fit the 450d and vice versa.
I have a 450d and love it,some great advanced features which I think the 1000d doesn't have so maybe worth spending the extra as you will grow into them as time goes on.
 
OK if new then deff 450D. One reason is that the 450 has Live view so you can see what the lens see's on the screen on the back of the camera. This really is vital when using old manual focus lenses as it helps focusing because you can zoom in 5x and 10x.
 
The 1000d also has live view. It is an even more crippled body than the 450d though, which is already quite basic.

The only differences between the 1000D and the 450D are a couple of megapixels, two focus points and spot-metering...

Don't dismiss the 1000D straight off the cuff... It's a very capable little camera and the results from it are excellent. To describe either camera as 'crippled' is daft... They're built to a price rather than a specification. My girlfriend uses her 1000D to do the small detail shots with me at weddings and I've never had cause to complain about the image quality. It also uses the same sensor as the 40D/400D and I can almost guarantee you'll not find a single complaint on here about the output from that thing! :)

Best advice as always would be to go and have a play with both if you can.

There's not a lot between them, as has been said. However, if this is in kit form, it's worth checking the kit lenses... the 1000d now seems to come with the older non IS kit lens, and I've heard on here it's not as good as the IS kit lens that comes with the 450d. That alone sells for between £75 and £100.
 
Thanks for all the replies, I'm still yet to make my mind up. Is there something wrong with amazon at the moment cause the 450D is now priced at £568 that's only £20 cheaper than the 500D I looked the other day and I'm sure it was listed at around £460 - £480?

It was the other day I wonder why they aren't selling it anymore, this may have an impact on which camera I buy as I get VAT off from amazon making it alot cheaper rather than spending a whole lot more on other websites.
 
There is a noticeable difference between the 450 kit lens (the IS lens) and the non-IS version in terms of image quality. I got the IS from bristol cameras for about £100 and chucked the kit lens off my 400D onto ebay (think I got £30 for it).
 
Hiya, I have the 1000D with kit lens which I bought from a TP member back in January this year. It has been a great camera, and I love it as it suits what I need it for, i.e., learning about photography, and getting to 'grips' with a DSLR.

I made my decision mainly on past experience and advice from others.

As a newbie to photography I didn't want to pay too much for a camera and decided to save towards an upgrade when more comfortable with my photography.

I'm now considering the Nikon D5000 but it depends whether I can raise enough for it before the £50 cashback ends, anybody know when it ends?

Why the sudden change? Have you actually tried each of them and discovered which feels best, or are you just buying on price?

Not really, except they are both 10mp. 40D is a more advanced 14bit sensor with a much cleaner image output. 450D sensor is definitely better than 1000d.
 
I bought my 1000d early last year & it came with the 18-55 IS lens. It is now supplied with the older, 18-55 lens which is reputed to not be a patch on the IS lens. The 450d is still supplied with the IS lens, therefore if I had to choose between the 1000d & the 450d now, I would pick the 450d.
 
Definitely the 450D if you can afford it. But then I would say that as I've just put one up for sale in the classifieds! :lol:

Seriously though, it's been a great camera for the last year and taken some great shots. The 18-55IS lens was pretty good too and you can pick them up on here for about £50 to £60.

Good luck with whatever you go for - they're both good cameras. :thumbs:
 
450D for sure.

Even the 400D is better than the 1000D in my opinion (you lose live view which is practically useless) but gain other things, especially with the hacked firmware.
 
I have bought a 1000d and it has not got IS on the lens but this will be my first DSLR and I will probably upgrade the lens in a month or two and if I feel that I want to go further into the world of photography i will upgrade to a 500d next year.
 
You'd be better stepping up to an xxD body when you do upgrade, imho. A second hand one would cost you less than a new xxxD body and quite frankly be miles ahead of it.

Hope you enjoy,you should try a prime lens,you can pick up the 50mm 1.8 canon for around £75 new.You will still get good money secondhand for the lens if you don't want to continue with photography as a hobby!

I too don't have the IS lens, and to be honest it hasn't really bothered me not having the IS as I fortunately have a steady hand so don't get too much camera shake and recently I have taken some close up shots that I am pleased with considering they were taken with a kit lens.

If there is anything you want to know about the camera, you are welcome to PM me and I will see if I can help (although I am also still learning all the capabilities of the camera).

As regards upgrading, I am happy with what I have at the moment, and the question is, is anyone really 100% satisfied with there kit because there is always something newer and improved to buy. My way of thinking is, do the best with what you can afford, but most of all ENJOY your photography experience.

Congratulations on your purchase! I too have the 1000D, and have been more than happy with it. I bought the entry level body, and as I get more experienced with photography, I can then get a better body in a year or so.

I have had great fun with my EOS, and I hope you do too :)
