Hey all,

This is probably going to sound like a stupid question seeing as you will all have the 1D Mark IV or something but I was just wondering if I should get the EOS 10D?

It would be my first ever Digital SLR camera and seeing as it is nice and cheap I thought it might be a good buy. I don't want to be spending excess amounts of money until I've gained some knowledge and experience. Also, I am a student so my budget isn't exactly a lot.

Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you all :thumbs:

The 10d was / is a great camera and if you can get a good one at a cheap price then I see no real reason why it won't be a good first camera.

The images from the 10d are OK so long as you don't use high ISO

Get a cheap 50mm f1.8 mark 1 canon lens and you will learn lots about photography.

To be honest there are some great low prices on the bottom end of the current EOS digital range and it might be worth saving up for a more current camera.
 
Just thought I should add that I bought a 10d when they first came out and used it for years professionally. It's retired now and battered as he'll but despite many trips around the world and a very hard life it still works fine. it's so rusty that I have to use a pair of pliers to turn it on but it does still work and the images I took with it are still selling!

I think I'm going to go for it, I just wanted to make sure it hasn't completely disappeared of the scene :) The one I'm looking at comes with a 28-80mm lens so I should be ready and rearing to go :)
 
Sorry but i wouldn't get a 10D.. It's an APS-C camera but doesn't take EF-S lenses which are designed for that crop factor. You will be very limited with wide angle options. 20D and later do take EF-S.
 
10D might hold you back slightly too much as it was one of the first digital models.

20D might be about rights and I think they cost very similar. 28-80mm is definitely the wrong choice in all departments. Tamron 17-50 normally gets recommended here and I would follow that.

No fb on the camera but have a look on MPB... They've got loads of 10D's for a ton each
 
I reckon I'm going to go for the 10D. It's cheap, good enough to start with, is bundled with a lens and comes with a warranty :)
 
It would need to be under £100 with the cheapo 28-80 to be even worth considering IMHO. You really would be better off looking for a 350d or 20d with a kit lens. It wouldn't cost much more and would be a lot more versatile (not to mention not as excruciatingly slow as the 10D was).
 
I'd love to get a better and newer model but I really need to stick below £200 :)

I've seen the 350D for £119 at MPB, and a kit lens will set you back from £30 to £60 (depending on model). You should easily manage a 350D or 20D and kit for under £200.
 
Hmm, I'll try and aim for the 350D under £200 then. I'm kind of realising the 10D is more outdated than I imagined :p

The 10D will not take Canon EF-S lenses but APS-C lenses from Sigma and Tamron will fit so the wider option is still there... just not from Canon.

I would suggest checking MPB as often as possible (and the other like Mifsuds and Ffordes). Whenever they list a cheap 350D it seems to sell pretty quickly, the last one was listed as excellent condition with only minor wear for £119 and was only on their website for under 2 days.
 
One thing to possibly consider is that the xxxD bodies have a max shutter speed of 1/4000 sec and the xxD's go to 1/8000. "So what?" You might say :D If you are a fan of fast primes / shallow DoF you can be limited to something like f2.8 at 1/4000. I often hit 1/8000 when using my 5/20D. One fix is to use ND filters but I personally fit them a pain.

If there's a bargain to be had I think I'd go for a xxD rather than a xxxD, unless the slightly smaller weight and bulk of the xxxD is an advantage.
 
I can vouch for the 350D. I enjoyed mine for a few years and it was a very capable camera, and you can get them for £200 with lens very easily.

Look carefully and you'll have change.

I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for a cheap 20D or a 350D. I'll have another look tomorrow when I'm back on my PC. The time of year probably isn't helping the prices but nevermind :p
 
20D is a better camera all in. 10D was just a little restricted particularly in low light AND the fact you can't use EF-S lenses is a pain.

Since you can get a kit lens for circa £50, I'd jump on that if I was the OP. Even if I had to wait a couple of weeks to get the lens.
 
Just had a quick look at Ffordes...

10D - £129.
20D - £169.
350D - £179.
30D - £239.

18-50mm IS EF-S (will not fit the 10D) - a rather piricy (IMVHO) - £99.
 
I've bidded on a 20D and a 350D on eBay, hopefully I'll have some luck and get one for a decent price :)
 
Really the 20D is a big jump from the 10D in my opinion. Much faster to operate and with a better LCD. Noise performance is much improved. For the cost of 20Ds now I would say it's a no brainer. Equally the 20D is much better than the 350D in terms of handling and the price difference is very small.

Well, there's that 20D at Ffordes that I mentioned. Their "kit" lens seems a bit dear but Mifsuds have one for £69 and a 50mm f1.8 for £69
 
Remember to check Gumtree in your area. That way you can have it in your hands before you part with your cash, and it can yield some bargains.

Thats what I started out with and ran with for 5 years. Great little camera and a half decent lens.

Go for it and get on the digital train.

You must realise though the train gets more expensive the further you go LOL I should know I'm at station gazillion now :D
 
The 350d is a good camera, I doubt you will regret buying it (and you won't outgrow it anywhere near as fast as an older camera like a 10D).

You will always get people who will moan about how poor the original kit lens was, but I've seen some very good images taken with it. Do a Flickr search or go look in the image archive at photography-on-the-net forum.

As a starter lens it is good for its price, and with care and practice will surprise you with what it can do. For optimum quality try and use it above f5.6 (ideally f8) where possible.

I wasn't dealing, just advising there may be more options after christmas, a lot of people like myself are hoping for a good stocking filler

Be careful, you could end up in trouble as you can't deal outside the classifieds here, and Josh won't be eligible to use them until February.
 
If you have large hand a 20d will fit better. The 350 is a great camera but very small.
 
My hands aren't exactly that big and I have thin, weedy fingers so I don't think that will be a problem. It's now just bargain spotting time, I've found a generously priced 350D but I've also found a 20D that's going cheap on eBay. I'm going to see how the 20D goes and if it ends up too much for me, I'll go for the 350D. Expect me to be posting what I've bought later and getting all excited :p
