Canon EOS 10D as first camera?

If it's the 18-55 IS, yes

If not, then I personally wouldn't. IS itself is quite helpful even at this focal length, but the main reason for me saying that is the older non-IS versions had a reputation for being awful, whereas the 18-55 IS is really quite decent for the money you can get them for.
 
You'll be seeing plenty of threads of me asking the most simple of things, so get ready ;)
