I have just bought my first digital SLR ( canon eos 10d ) im looking at buying a lens for using with this camera while i save to buy a new good quality lens. What i need to know is what lens fit and work on this camera have been on e bay looking at sigma and canon lens but some do work and some don't? or so i believe any help gratefully received.

It will take any EF lens from Canon- or any EF-fit lens from another manufacturer like Sigma etc. I don't think this will take EF-S lenses though (someone please correct me if I am wrong)

IIRC this is correct :thumbs:

Sigma compatability will depend on the age of the lens; while anything for an EF mount will physically fit there can be problems with electronic control meaning the lens will only work wide open in Av or M.

It sounds like the lens will only be a cheap stop gap so perhaps consider a Canon 28-80 if you're after a zoom, or a 50/1.8 if you're happy with a prime? The latter is a far better lens optically...

not wrong as far as im aware it was 30d and up take ef-s obviously not the 5d though. Saw a guy in jessops once trying to put an EF-S on a 5d. He couldnt work out why it wasnt fitting and really started to push this thing in. almost cried

Would you learn things like this at a camera club. And how would I find one in my area OXFORDSHIRE.

The 10D cant take EF-S Lenses, the cameras below are the only ones that can take them and note the 10D isnt there:

* EOS 300D/Digital Rebel
* EOS 350D/Digital Rebel XT
* EOS 20D
* EOS 20Da
* EOS 400D/Digital Rebel XTi
* EOS 30D
* EOS 450D/Rebel XSi
* EOS 1000D/Rebel XS
* EOS 40D
* EOS 50D
* EOS 500D/Rebel T1i
* EOS 7D

The 10D, and earlier cameras share the EF-only mount with the full frame EOS camera bodies, and also with the APS-H size EOS camera bodies (1D series), despite having a smaller sensor and therefore a smaller mirror. However, attempting this on full frame Canon EF mount cameras would cause the mirror to collide with the rear lens element, potentially damaging the lens and/or camera.

This is from wiki by the way :)

I had (or still have actually) a 10D, but back in them days EF-S lenses weren't around, so I would have been made to look stupid by saying it will take these as it's a crop frame. After dumping my original Sigma 28-300, which was trully awful only I didn't realise it at the time, I got a Tamron 28-75 which was excellent. But it might not give you as wide a view as you would want. For wide, I got a Sigma 15-30, which I still use on full frame, and it's good for me.

The 10D was, and still is a good camera. Don't let anyone give you any cause for concern about it being only 6mp. I've printed A3 from this. I once met the lady who runs the Dreamstime stock library site and she told me that their best photos (3 years ago) were coming from the 1D/1Ds series and the 10D.
