Hi Everybody,

I'm an amateur photographer and recently bought a used cam (mentioned in the title). The cam itself is great but there is an ugly scratch in the viewfinder (see attachment).

I'm not really bothered as everything works as expected but the damage is just on a piece of clear plastic plate with the AF zone marks that I believe can't be expensive to replace thus I'd like to do so to make the instrument complete. ;)

I actually started looking for a replacement but I don't even know that what this piece of plate called. Then I started reading articles with the keyword "viewfinder" but there was no mention. I guess it would be much faster to ask somebody has more theoretical background in cameras.

So could somebody please tell me what this plastic plate called? :)

Many thanks

Kind Regards
Tony

PS: Sorry for the poor AF in the pics but it can't be turned off in the used cam.

As far as I'm aware its called a focus screen, you can get various different types, they give different over lays through the viewfinder things like 3rds grids cross points all sorts of little tricks to improve the ability to get the item in focus easier.

Assuming the scratch is on the focusing screen it's a pretty easy fix - FYI the AF zone marks aren't on the focusing screen, unless Canon do things differently it's just a bit of glass (or in this case plastic?).

AFAIK it is only xxD and xD series of Canon cameras which have user replaceable focusing screens.

That said, it shouldn't cost a fortune for Canon to replace it.

Are you absolutely certain that it is a physical scratch on the screen and not just a fibre/hair that has settled there?

Look at the link I posted, xxxD can be changed too. Ask me how I know :)

WOW, so many helping hands... Thanks for the helpful comments to everyone. Finally we have the name of it... :)

I've checked out the links that Craft posted and used that method to remove this focusing screen thing. The scratch is really a scratch not a hairline. I presume that the previous owner used a different one and didn't keep it in a safe place and put it back before sold the cam.

Anyway I'm also considering to buy a cross hair one, it looks better for my purposes.

Thanks again for the assistance to everybody. :)
