Canon EOS 7D Error 02

Yes
I was out yesterday afternoon taking pictures of my two boys learning to ride their bikes. I was also taking some video footage and for the first time since I bought my camera I got an error. (Camera's less than 4 weeks old.)

I was recording a movie, the buffer indicator appeared, filled instantaneously and then I got the 'Error 02'. It asked me to remove and reformat the card. I always format my cards before each 'session' and it's a card I've used in the past without issue.

I'd already taken many pictures and some video, so I didn't want to format again. I continued and got the same error the next time I tried to record a movie. But it worked again the next time.

It's a Sandisk Extreme III 30MB/s.

I'm hoping it's a card problem and not the camera.

I've just tried to recreat the error and have succeeded. This time it was just with pictures. High speed shooting of L+RAW, dozen or so shots. After I released the trigger I got the error on the rear LCD screen and none of the shots have been written to the card. :(

have you tried another card.

That's my next step.

I've just tried to recreate the error again, using the same card, and it's not happening. Very strange.

Hmmm, I'd try a different card, but this thread on PotN makes it look like it's a warranty repair.

That's my worry. The camera is under 28 days old (delivered to me 14th October), so if it does need returning, I'll be pushing John Lewis for a replacement, not a repair.

I'm not happy with the thought that this could be the start of a whole heap of trouble. So I've emailed JL and asked if I can exchange the camera in store. I'll keep the thread updated...

Aggghh, I've just remembered! I've got Invisible Shields on the screens. :annoyed:

I'm just back from town, where John Lewis were most accommodating and simply swapped the camera for a new one. I think the fact it was under 28 days old played a significant part. If it'd been older they would have insisted on a repair.

To add to the good day, I don't appear to have missed DHL with my new lens. So I should have that later too. AND! I ordered a spare battery whilst I was out at a bargain price. It's like Christmas!

JL can't insist on a repair. As the consumer you have the right to choose - refund, repair or replacement.

Another  for John Lewis's customer service. Although I've handled a 7D there I haven't really considered buying mine from them.

As they price match (high street) prices they would equal Jessops price. It's also a clear vindication of buying kit like that in a shop.

If that had been an online purchase the end result may have been the same but you could have been without your camera for a little while.

Agreed. They weren't the cheapest around, but they weren't far off (at time of purchase). But what swung it for me was, like you say, being able to buy it from a store that I can easily walk into and has a reputation for good customer service. Another reason was their extended warranty was relatively good value and once added to the cost of the camera made it worth buying from them.

As for any remedy regarded the return of faulty goods - it depends on (amongst other things) how much time has elapsed, the (if any) inconvenience to the retailer and/or consumer, and the cost to the retailer to sort the problem. A customer cannot insist on a refund if it's unreasonable/disproportionately costly compared to a repair, for example. If the goods had been 10 months old and I had had significant use of them, then JL would have been entitled to the opportunity to repair the item. As it was so new, with not so much use, I could have easily argued for a refund/replacement, if the need had arisen. But at the end of the day, if they wanted to insist on a repair, they could and I would've had to refuse and seek remedy through the courts. I guess this is where companies differ. I can imagine my situation would have been handled completely differently had I bought from Comet, for example.

Anway, we're going off topic and I have a brand new 7D and EF 70-200mm f2.8 II IS to play with. :D
