Canon EOS M vs Fuji A-X1

Hi All,

Have taken a few shots indoors to show the difference between the Canon EOS M and the the Fuji X-A1. Conditions where identical, both used standard kit lens, same ISO and Av settings. Shots taken handheld with IS ON.

As you can see the Fuji is much cleaner, sharper with more detail at ISO6400, I even had the noise reduction set to default and -1 setting in the Fuji. What is also noticeable is the huge difference in white balance ! The Canon colours are almost exactly what they looked like with my very own eyes, whereas the Fuji colours are what it would look like with natural light. Colour temp of room would be approx 2500K.

The Canon does however recover more shadow detail that can be seen below the clock when the Fuji Stone (Shadow Tone) is set to +2, have now shown the same shot when Stone set to 0.

Interesting shots Lee. To me the Fuji shots are more naturally coloured where as the Canon shots are very yellow. But as you say the Canon replicates the scene similar to what you saw with your eyes so maybe that's the better shot?

And imo whilst looking at the images on my phone the Fuji looks to beat it hands down at high iso. The noise performance is really good from the Fuji compared to the Canon and I'd be willing to give up a little loss of detail in the shadows for cleaner overall noise performance.

I have now added some more shots, I realized I had the Fuji Shadow tone was set to +2, took the same shots at default STone=0. The Fuji now recovers the shadow detail to a similar level as the Canon.

A fairer test would be to set the Canon to iso 4000 though, as that would then give a similar shutter speed (Fuji get a bit carried away with their iso ratings).

Which camera feels the nicest to use BTW?

Yeah I heard Fuji get a bit carried away with the ISO ratings . I'll take the same shots at ISO 4000 on the Canon to match the shutter speed, and see what difference there is. Handling wise I do prefer the Fuji, has more direct controls, and feels better in the hand. I love the way I can control the AF spot in a similar way to the Canon DSLR, press AF button, and use scroll wheels to move the AF point ! You can also change the AF window size in the Fuji, whereas the AF window is a fixed size, and is a bit too big for my liking. I guess its bigger to give the AF system an easier time.

I also tried my 24-105L using the converter, but was too lens heavy. The Canon 85 1.8 felt better, though that's quite weighty too, but loved the shallow depth of field it gave, and is sharp !

manualfocus-g, I've taken a shot using the Fuji at ISO 128000, F5.6, 1/58sec, NR=-1, Stone=-1. So the Fuji now has a similar shutter speed to that of the Canon.
