Yes
OK - my 'new to me' Canon EOS400D should be arriving soon :D

Looking at ads for CF memory cards - the modern cards are much higher capacity and faster than the ones I have already.

The manual just says that the EOS400D is compatible with CF I and II cards.

Is there a maximum capacity (GB) that the camera can handle ?
Is there a maximum speed or maybe a speed where the camera can't handle the full potential of the memory card ?

I don't think there's any limit on cf card size you can use in your 400D, which seems to be borne out .....

HERE

What I'm not sure of is if there's a limit on card size which your camera can format? That shouldn't be an issue anyway as you can format the card on your PC.

Your 400D wont supprt the latest UDMA cards, but you might as well get them anyway - you wont have your current camera forever, and they'll still work - just not at UDMA speeds.

Thanks - have bookmarked that page.
Lot's of good stuff !

I love this website
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/camera_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-9424

however, it mentions the 450D which takes SD but not the 400D
weird.

there is a limit to card speed and use in cameras but it's worth buying a decently branded one
I would look at the 30D/40D as the they are a similar generation I think
it wouldn't be accurate but might give you a guide as to what is worth paying the extra for and what is not..

For me I'm more limited by the cost!

Something like the Sandisk Extreme III or IV which are around 30mb/s and 45mb/s respectively are both fine speed-wise... anything faster gets very expensive!
Similarly I normally go for 4gb versions since this limits the potential losses if your card gets damaged.. your shoot is spread over multiple cards as a backup. Plus, as above, anything over 4-8gb is starting to look pretty pricey!
