Hi folks

I'm looking for advice/suggestions of anyone who might be able to help.

I have an EOS 1D mkIII and I am considering moving to an EOS 5D mkIII.
My reasons are full frame, physical size and video.

The subject of size kicked off my thinking. I have a commercial opportunity with underwater photography but I cannot find any underwater housing suitable for the 1D.

The challenge is I want to change the body without parting with any cash.
I was thinking about trading in the 1D mkIII along with my L series EF100-400mm 4.5-5.6 in return for a 5D mkIII and some cash to spare? I would consider a used 5D mkIII.

Any thoughts on whether this is sensible? and any dealers/individuals that might be willing to discuss this?

Many thanks, Dan.

Hi Dan, welcome.

I can only offer a bit advice on the underwater aspect. Not many dedicated underwater housing manufacturers offered housings for the 1D3, from memory it was just Subal and Seacam, both of whom are at the top end of the price ranges. The 5d3 is getting much better support from a range of maufacturers, take a look at camerasunderwater.co.uk, divelife.co.uk, oceanoptics.co.uk and ocean leisure cameras for starters.

What type of underwater work is it? If its models / kids etc in a swimming pool you 'may' be able to get away with one of the cheap ewa-marine plastic bag style housings, but there's a reason they are the price they are.

A good source of info can be found on wetpixel.com

Hope that helps a bit.

Mike

To be honest, I suspect that you are being very over optimistic if you expect a 1DIII + 100-400 to pay for a 5DIII, even at HK import prices, let alone recouping any cash on top.

However, if you can afford it, it's a sensible upgrade provided that you wont miss the 4fps that you will lose.

Private price 1D MKIII £700/900 Through a dealer £650/800
Private price 100-400 £700/900 through dealer £600/800

5D MKIII best grey market price is around £2000/2100 or UK dealer £2275

Looking at ebay prices a 1D MkIII goes for between £750-850 and around the same for the 100-400 lens so you'll probably struggle to get a straight swap for a good second hand one. Although the 1D is a good camera it's getting a bit long in the tooth and finding someone who'll swap brand new tech for a 5-6 year old camera will be a hard one.

If you sell both you'll maybe have to put a good few quid towards a new one, even if you do get it as an import. I think Hdew Cameras are the cheapest in the UK at the moment at £1949 http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-body-961-p.asp with a 3 year warranty. I've already been offered a 1D MkIV for my 5D MkIII and turned it down, but that was a difficult choice.

Thanks for the replies folks. A good reality check on the £££'s and now I know where I stand.

The underwater shoot is of kids, for local swimming group and that's the problems I've had with the 1D3, the size and therefore restricted underwater housings that are available for it and so (one of) the reasons for looking to move to the 5D3. I want to use strobes for the lighting which the cheaper plastic housing wont allow but I do appreciate the thought.

So where would be best to post the 'for sale' items - on the Classified forum here?

Thanks, Dan.

The price fall happened in about 1 week down from well over £1100 to £900 or less. Somebody on classifieds was well too keen to shift theirs at any silly price, and everybody then used it as an example. Well thanks very much for that  There is no way 7D is equal to 1DIII even if the asking price is similar now - they need to go back up :dummy:
The 5DIII will be worth it though
