Canon EW-83E Hood - is it worth it?

Looking to buy a new Canon 10-22mm for Xmas but notice that the 'real' Canon hoods EW-83E are an absolute rip off at about £40. Even Amazon are asking about £25. Has anyone bought a fleabay model - which seem to start about £3.50 post free from HK. Big difference! Amazon also have third party models for about £11? Am I wasting my cash on the real thing? :thinking:

I bought a third party one for around £6 from Hong Kong and it works fine. I don't really find myself using the hood that much, but don't mind as it was so cheap. Had I spent £40 on it, however ...
 
If you put the two (or three) together, you will notice the difference in quality. But apart for the price difference, not much between them. I have 3rd party on my Nifty Fifty and my 70-200L, suit me just fine!
 
I stumped up for the genuine canon one and felt it was worth it. It feels better than one of the cheep ebay ones and the insides are coated in a soft material to help minimize lens flare.

Can you remember which one it was - it's just that I've heard reports of some of the HK ones being a terrible fit but I'm willing to try on a personal recommendation?
 
Can't really comment as I only have the genuine article, do use it all the time though

Suppose if you are buying a lens for that sort of money another twenty five quid isn't much more when seen as a percentage

Have a feeling that you want the proper one and are trying to convince yourself you don't. Question is would you be happy with the third party hood and would you end up buying the genuine article in the end

Been there myself and have usually found its a false economy, might also affect the sell on price one day
 
Used fleabay ones on all my EF-S lenses, other than some of them being sprayed matt black inside instead of felted there was no difference.

L lenses comes with them so not a problem.

For the ammount of use they get it's not worth splashing the extra.

This is one case where Camera manufacturers take the mickey a little too much.
 
I purchased a cheap hood from China/fleabay for my 15-85mm (EW-78E) - which was useless...

Could see the petals through the viewfinder between 15 -30mm (in fact could still see the RHS petal when the LHS petal had disappeared from view).

Also the large petals were at the sides, not at the top....

It was 'correctly' marked as EW-78E and the inside did have felt material rather than paint.

Have ditched it, purchased the Canon version, and learnt my lesson!

Side by side you can clearly see the size difference between the two.

Found out Kerso does the real one for about £20 anyway if you buy the lens from him so might just go with that.

Nah, just an old git who has wasted enough cash over the years and realised its buy once and buy right
 
I have both fleabay and originals: the small plastic bits that provide the 'bounce' when you turn and click in the hood have come off one of the fleabay hoods. Other than that, they're pretty much identical. For the price (1/10 cost), I think it's a no brainer to be honest - get the fleabay ones.
 
All my hoods are Canon ones - mainly as I bought them all from High Street outlets. However, your main consideration should be this - why are you buying the hood in the first place? Primarily I'd suggest its to protect the business end of the lens from impact/contact damage and do you have faith in the dubious ebay ones or would you prefer the sturdiness of the Canon original???


Drop it with a fleabay and it'll probably shatter, but the Canon one would do the job and save the lens. In my experience the cheap hoods only look the same as the originals, but they perform very differently when it matters!

No, as per my post I use Canon ones, but I know a man who has and when it snaps off at the lightest touch, its no good for damage limitation!

Canon have no real need to charge such a high price for Hoods. As there is no real R&D costs to recover. I can under stand the lens being expensive as the amount of R&D and testing that goes will generate a high expense, but a plastic hood, come Canon, fair price for a piece of plastic !

He must have got a dud then. That's not the same as saying that the Canon hood will be any better at protecting your lens from impact than a 3rd party.

I think it is, on a balance of probabilities! Ie, the more flexible cheaper hood is likely to flex and break off than the solid Canon hood!

But I agree with the posters who state original items are too expensive.
