Canon extender - better on a 5D3 than a 5D2?

A few years back I purchased a Canon Extender EF 2x III to be used with a 5D2 and a 70-200 F2.8 IS

I was not blown away - images were not crisp. I ended up sending the extender back.

I am currently on the verge of buying something like a Canon 100-400, Canon 400 F5.6 or Tamron 150-600. Before I commit, I
was wondering if my 70-200 mated to an extender would work better on a 5D3 (rather than a 5d2).

Thoughts please?
 
If you have the same lens, the result will be no different.

It is supposed to be much better on the MKII version of the 70-200mm IS - I always found the MK1 too soft with an extender.

Depends how picky you are but I was very pleased with my 70/200 f4 IS and converters (1.4 & 2x) compared to my 400 f5.6 prime. Although others on here have not been so lucky.

5DIII has less aggressive AA filter than 5DII. Any difference would be down to that and improved AF only. ie. it might resolve just a tiny bit more and acquire sharper focus.

What do you have to lose? 100-400 is a bit soft on the long end (340-360mm in real life) and the best alternative is 400mm prime without IS (this could add some nice blur to your otherwise pin sharp shots)
 
Well - I've decided to go with the Canon 400mm F5.6. I'm looking forward to photographing things other than people :)
