Is this really worth £400?
It seems to be a hell of a lot of money for what it is.
Would it be that superior over the Mk II version?
 
I read somewhere (darned if I can find a link) that the MarkIII has improved colour rendition over the MarkII with certain lenses.
I suppose if that's really important then it's worth it. When thinking of the 1.4 MarkII why not consider the Kenko 1.4 DGX Pro (or DG)300?
It's a heck of a lot cheaper and the results (to me) are indistinguishable.

I sold my Canon in favour of the Kenko and I'm happy.
 
I've done a bit of reading about it. Well the main difference is supposed to be faster AF with big fat grey mkII lenses, and perhaps less CA. There seems to be little benefit for 70-200s or other smaller lenses. Check out the digital picture iso crops for particular examples. Personally I am unlikely to upgrade my mk1 (pretty much identical to mk2), maybe I'll sooner get rid of it altogether for how little use it gets.
 
Not a direct comparison but the MkIII 2X is only very marginally better than my Sigma 2X so my gut feeling is you are really paying for the Canon name or in this case III instead of II
 
I've got a Kenko Pro 300 DGX 1.4x and for the price, compared to the Canon MkIII, it's a cracker of a TC. When used with any of my lenses there's not a lot of visible degradation of IQ and the AF speed is still pretty rapid with it on. Very pleased with it and it only cost around £120.
