Canon f4 or Sigma 2.8

Well I am finally able to up grade some of my lens collection. I am struggling with the thought of the following two though. I just can't make my mind up :help:

Canon 70-200f4L or the Sigma 70-200f2.8 EX DG HSM APO (I think that's the one anyway)

I am moving from the Canon 55-250is so this should be a good jump up hopefully either way. I am so tempted about the 2.8 on a tele but it's the quality of the Canon that is talked about all the time. However the f4 is holding me back I think as it wouldn't be much use at concerts or anything low light at all... will it?

The other point is that the Canon is more readily available second hand and the Sigma isn't.

Any thoughts? More so on the Sigma as I'm finding it hard to get much opinion on it.

Can't speak for the Sigma as I've never had one. The F4L Canon is apparently a good lens, but you'll always be wondering what the F2.8L was like. If you get the Canon F2.8L, you'll wish you'd got the F2.8L ISII and so on. Trust me, it becomes an obsession - ask me how I know......:cool::lol:

In terms of which is best, I imagine the Sigma 2.8 would be better overall than the Canon F4 but that's only because I see plenty of people with Sigma lenses. If it's something you are going to keep forever, then that may be the best choice for two reasons. Firstly, it lets in twice as much light as the Canon. Secondly, it won't get 'noticed' so much, although depending upon your viewpoint this may be a bad thing?

Look at second-hand values to get a gauge of which one is the better buy - especially if you may have the urge to change it again in future.;)
 
Thanks, yea I am definitely swinging towards the Sigma. Haha yea I know I would think I wish I had the better Canon every time and that's just silly money to me just now... I just can't think about laying down that amount on a lens just now.

I do have a Sigma 10-20 and really do like it, so I'm guessing if it's built along the same lines I should be happy, hopefully these lens aren't too soft though and the QC is decent so I can find a good bit of glass.

if you search you can find a fair few reports of the Canon 70-200f4L actually having better iq than the canon 2.8 version
