Hello all.

since acquiring a Sigma 500mm f4.5, Canon fd mount. i am looking to purchase an adapter so to use the lens on my digital cameras.

i just wondered if anybody has tried the same, and which item did they use, and from which company.
i have seen plenty on ebay, but would rather deal with any UK company than the far afield and exotic ones.
but if its a case of having to i will.

also if anybody has one for sale, i would appreciate if you can contact me.

i remember Canon making them years ago, but they will be like hens teeth.

many thanks for the help.

Cheers Paul.....

There's loads on the bay of e. They go for about £25. I will be getting one soon but i'm not sure which one is best.

Father-in-law dealt with SRB for his Minolta to Leica adapter, found them very helpfull, very knowledgeable

I wonder how they affect the bokeh. Canon EF 1.4x has quite a dramatic effect, so what happens with these?
In a way these lenses may be best of on m4/3 cameras, and the upcoming Sony mirrorless. I've seen one FD lens with arri mount on fleabay for cinema so that is another possibility.

hello j37r

thanks for the link.

grotty, no AF as its a manual focus lens.

cheers paul

Take in account you won't get infinity focus unless you buy the optical version, which, on the other side, will introduce a crop factor and some image quality deterioration.

Ah. Would AF work with a mount adapter if the FD lens was AF?

Only modern EF lenses can autofocus. FD lenses are fully mechanic and fully manual.

We are only looking at them to get cheap super telephotos or f/1.2 glass.

I also forgot to add than you can modify the bayonet of the FD lens to an EF one, if the lens worth it, of course, since it's not a cheap operation.
It's the only way you'll get the best out of a FD lens on an EOS body.
It's kind of ironic because you can use Contax/Yashica, Leica R, Olympus OM, Nikon F, M42 and Pentax PK, without any kind of problem but, at the same time, you have limitations when trying to adapt Canon FD or FL lenses.

hi david,

do you know who converts the fd to eos type of work, and roughly how much.

cheers paul

So I have just bought a FD 300mm f/2.8L, well used but as the seller said it still works smoothly. So fingers crossed it will be fine.
Is there any chance to convert it to EF mount or just these adapters? What max focusing distance would I get without the glass element?

In fact a friend from another forum does that kind of work and I believe he lives in the UK.
I don't know how much does it cost, but I'm going to ask him and I'll let you know.

Ian, what lens would you like to convert?

daugirdas, I think it's possible to convert almost any FD lens. It makes more sense to find trouble converting the wide angle models, than the tele ones, like the 300mm f/2.8 L.
About the max focusing distance you can get from a regular adapter, I'm afraid I can't be accurate enough. Maybe you should try to contact one of those ebay sellers. I just know you won't get infinity focus.

My adapter is used on a 350D which has a crop factor of 1.6, the adapter magnifies by a factor of 1.26, so combined it almost doubles the focal length of any lens attached and loses 1 stop of light, at least mine does.

I have not yet used an FD lens with this set up and found a loss in picture quality, I have had excellent results from all of my lenses ranging from 17mm to a 600mm Sigma mirror.

My most used lens is a Tokina 80-200mm F2.8 ATX-PRO which is razor sharp and on the 350 it becomes a 160-400 F4 and I paid about £80.00 for it 3 years ago, you cannnot get bargains like that with EF lenses, plus I much prefer manual focus, always use that with my T90 and F1.

John:)

John, I belive you still get nice results from it, but the quality is much better when you're not using the optical adapter. :)
That's why I never invested on Canon FD glass to use on EOS bodies. I think it just worths when you have excellent lenses to do the conversion, otherwise you better buy Contax, Leica R, Olympus OM or any other excellent system.

hello david.

many thanks for the info.

the lens i would like to convert to eos mount is a Sigma 500mm f4.5, which is in Canon fd mount.

Hello all,

i have been looking on E-bay, and there seems to be quite a few to choose from.
the one i noticed was being sold by a company called "Pixlamb", i just wondered if anybody has dealt with them and what they thought of the adapter and how it performed.

cheers paul.

People have made Canon FD 1.4x-A into an adapter:

http://www.vp7.de/eosfd/eosfd.html

This sounds quite good, except I have no tools, nor 1.4x-A.

I have another thought - could EF 1.4x do the trick with the right adapter ring combination (thinner than ebay one) and some chip to trick the camera?

OR would anyone physically convert FD L telephotos to EF mount? There is a lot of tube without any glass so it must be doable. Anyone can do it near Bristol?
