Hello.

Are there any canon fit lenses worth getting which range from 17/18mm up to 100mm? Im aware the greater the zoom range the less likely the image is to be sharp at both ends of the scale.

EDIT. I have a Canon 400D body and 18-55mm kit lens to sell to fund the lens so nothing above £250.

15-85mm?

The 18-135mm STM isn't bad but ultimately it's just a kit lens so it's not awesome :) covers a nice range though

Yeah the 18-135mm STM is F3.5-4.5 so it's a little faster and it has IS too which is good.

The 18-55mm F2.8 would be sharper/faster but it doesn't have a huge zoom range so I guess it depends what you're after.

^^^ Yes, excellent lens, with IS. Much better than the 17-85mm (or anything else similar) and the extra 2mm at the wide end makes a surprising difference.

I once had the Canon 17-85mm and was less than impressed with it - price wise it was good but performance was poor particularly at the wide end.

The 18-135mm STM lens seens to get a decent review here:

I certainly quite like it as a kit lens :) Currently £299 new from Park but there might be cheaper if you look around

That would be good I think for me. Like I say I have a 10-20mm sigma and this 18-135 would also cover me for the day I finally buy a 150-500mm sigma :) I need to check the reviews for it.

EDIT: the 18-135 is £189 on MPB which is what im getting for my 400D, 18-55mm kit lens hopefully.

Yeah but the regular 18-135mm EF-S lens is a bit crap from what I hear. You'll need to buy the latest version which is the STM lens to get something semi decent.

The 18-135mm STM is only a year old or so which means you probably won't see many around second hand. I checked MPB already and didn't see one :/

Im using the EF-S18-135 IS STM at the moment and gettting some very sharp images on my 60D, I would advise you to download the lens material in EOS utility so the camera corrects any lens issues IE, CA,vinetting and periferal that can occur.

Its very well reccommended

Ahh ok. If its hard to get hold of ile probably got for 17-70mm sigma. Well until someone recommends better for £200 second hand.

The 18-135mm probably on par with the 17-85mm, both lenses have their issues, but in good light will take a pretty decent image and there ain't a great deal of difference in price used. Yes there are better lenses out there, the 15-85mm as mentioned, but either of these fall into your budget range. The sigma 17-70mm not the best lens either, very mediocre images, so your choice is buy one of the above or save a bit more for the 15-85mm.

I am willing to have a shorter zoom range for example something from the late teens up to 50's if it means a sharper, lower aperture is available. For now I do have a 55-250mm zoom lens to cover me over 50mm and I wont be upgrading anything time soon and ile probably buy a 70-200 f4 before I get the 150-500mm anyway.

Well the Canon EF-S 18-55mm F2.8 is supposed to be very sharp and since it's F2.8 its fast... But it's also expensive! The Tamron 18-55mm F2.8 is supposed to be a cheaper alternative but obviously not as good.

I think if you want a zoom with more range then the 18-135STM is one of the better options. I wouldn't say it's hard to find unless you're only looking for second hand? The STM is £269 from Digital Rev ;)

Nope, the standard 18-135 is very nice, sharp and useable in all circs. I used one for a wedding not long ago (amongst other lenses of course!) and it gave some very nice results. The only difference is the STM motor for video, that's it.

If you're not shooting video, go for the non STM version, otherwise they are essentially the same.

Someone is selling Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO DG HSM - This is a NON-OS version. £350.

Would this be worth getting for £300?

Great lens but not what you're looking for?

Hi Beav, if you've extended your options to a shorter reach then the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 is worth a look. I bought this as I couldn't justify the extra outlay for the Canon 17-55 f2.8 but it's pretty close in terms on IQ, definitely worth reading up on. I'm extremely happy with the lens. Think they sell used for about £300ish. Good luck!

There not the same, the lens configeration has been changed inside, It has 1 more apature blade =7 not 6 and a by product of the newer lens configeration is a closer focus MFD figure @ 15.4 inch as apposed to 10 inchs on the non STM version, Also physically they are differnet in size the STM slightly shorter and wider, Im sure there are other differences but cannot remember of my head, Plus the image quality is getting close to the 15-85 in places.

Just found this,

So you read the review on Photozone and you reckon they're wrong about the quality and that they're lying about the redesign? :P

As for you Beav, you need to decide what you want lol

This was taken with the STM version, No studio no special lighting judt me sat on my settee with popup flash, So nothing special to get the best from the lens. As you can clearly see sunlight on the side of her face coming thru lounge window.

There is def a difference in the 2 lenses, I tried both before settling on the STM

As you can clearly see in the 2nd image the STM 4th from left is shorter in lengh and wider. Also have a read of this.

Oh and Beave the 18-135mm when fitted on a crop frame body is roughly equivelent to 28-200mm

The 70-200 will be roughly 105-300mm

True haha. Well I always wanted a 70-200 but the price means ile have to wait longer but if I can pick one up second hand for £300/£400 ile get one. After this I could get a 17-70mm sigma which will be perfect for other photography.

If I was to get a 70-200mm lens ide have my 55-250mm canon lens to sell and put towards a 17-70mm.

Going to give it a week or two until I decide.

I used to ride trials and I have some parts to sell. Im just not a fan of ebay for selling them because the parts cost me a lot and I don't want to start the bidding too low therefore its costing me a lot to list them.

Well, Photozone are one of the worst testing sites on the net IMO.

However, I'm prepared to be corrected if the STM lens is optically different.

What I can say for certain is that the non STM version is a VERY good lens indeed and easily put performs most other "super zooms".

Why? Just genuinely interested in why you don't rate Photozone. Thanks :)

I just find their tests are so far removed from real world shooting, and a lot of their test results are a bit iffy to say the least.

I think there are times where you can be a little too scientific?

I don't know which review you read, but the reviews from photozone and the digital picture pretty much came to the same conclusion and that they both gave the 18-135mm STM version a thumbs up.

As for the non STM version again both reviewers said it has one or 2 good points but overall performance was only slightly better than the kit lens 18-55mm so I don't know where you're coming from with your comments?

Definitely the 18-135mm STM or 15-85mm would be the lenses to go for

The STM seems to have a different manual focus mechanism, different build materials and larger elements internally so they've changed more than just the USM motor.

Whether that equates to a better quality lens I can't really say since I only own the STM version but it's certainly not the same.

Beav, if you already have a 55-250mm then I'm not sure a 70-200mm will be a huge improvement/upgrade. This thread started off with you wanting a good zoom lens with a wide focal range and now you're talking about replacing one lens for a similar one lol :) What is it exactly that you're trying to improve?

Ive just checked the pricing and for £150 extra I may as well get the 150-500mm sigma at a later date and not get a 70-200. This way im covered for other race tracks if I chose to go sometime. For now its the 17-70mm sigma :)

Not sure on the 17-70 Sigma as I've not really read about it but the 150-500 is a possibility for me in the future. It seems to be a good solid lens for the price and obviously covers a huge range. The only downside is the lack of speed which will mean higher ISOs are necessary sometimes.

I've got a Canon 70-200mm F4L which I'm tempted to replace with a 70-200 F2.8L Mk2 and a 2x extender when I have some cash! I get this then I might not need the Sigma but who knows.

At least you're likely to be able to find a 150-500 second hand somewhere!

A vote for both the Sigmas. I have the 17-70 os version and the150-500 and would recommend both. If you look on either my flickr or my own site, most of the images are taken with either of these lenses
