Canon fit lens recommendations

Hi Guys,

looking for a decent all rounder with a good zoom range to fit the 5d MK1.

Just something I can throw in the car for work and not worry if it gets damaged, stolen, electrocuted etc - you get the drift.

Optics are the main concern, obviously looking for something with decent image quality - needn't be Canon, third party would be o.k

So, any recommendations before I head off to the Wanted forum?

The obvious choice for a walkabout lens with good zoom range on canon full frame would be the 24-105L.
 
Either the 24-105L or maybe a 28-135mm. Just dependent on what you're more concerned about.

looking for something on the longer end 70/100 to 3/400, maybe around £3/400?

Don't really want to be spending any more just to leave in car.

Hopefully will find a battered version of something that was once decent, like a 70-400L :lol:


edit - anyone had any experience with the Canon EF III 75-300mm F3.5-5.6 USM?

I don't, but I always read it's not very good.
A 55-250 would be much better, but you can't use it on a 5D.

If you want a super tele, I guess you can look at a 100-300, used.
 
I had a Tamron 28-300 VC which was a good performer in the IQ stakes. The VC system was very good and it was a reasonably good performer in AF speed too. It wasn't the sharpest lens I've had, but I used it at an airshow last year and got a lot of good photos with it. The only thing I didn't like about it was the front element rotates when focussing which makes it difficult using grad filters, but that's not a massive downer.
 
I hd the 75-300mm (v3) back in the day, it was an OK lens, nothing special.

I used it on a cropped sensor camera, but any lens weaknesses will be magnified on fullframe.
