Canon fit Sigma lenses?

Hi Guys,

mate looking for a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 in Canon fit (earlier versions)

What should he be looking out for in regards to EX, DG, APO etc?
 
I've recently bought a new USM version and it's excellent. It's nice and sharp right from wide open and the colour reproduction and contrast is great. I did try the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro and was all set to buy it but the photos were just not that good. I couldn't afford a Canon 24-70 L and the Tamron just didn't feel like it was that well built but gave me some good photos when I tested it, so I just went for the new Sigma USM.
 
Thanks guys, but as he's a pensioner his budget is pretty limited so the newer version is a no go.

Any other options around that range he could be looking at?
