As above, tamron 17-50 2.8 or sigma 18-50 2.8 and why?

most people go for the tamron for its overall sharpness and image quality, and its only £20 dearer than the sigma so i would recommend the tamron, best in budget class. also do you need the wide angle because another lens to consider is the tamron 28-75mm f2.8.

Ive got a tamron 28-75 that i use for gigs at the pub, i want something wider for general walk around and indoor car shows.

Its def going to be one of these two, but just depends which one!

I thought they were both pretty close in term of IQ?

Does anyone have a comparison/opinion on the VC vs non-VC version of the Tamron?

My concern is if the VC version is as sharp throughout the range as the non-VC supposedly is?

I purchased a used Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 about a year ago (it was a year old at the time) and it broke last week (zoom ring stopped working.)

During the past year I owned it, I found it to be an excellent lens and was on my camera about 90% of the time (see my Flickr for example shots.)

However, I have now just ordered a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 to replace it because from what I have read, it is a bit more flare resistant and AF is a little faster (if noisier.)

now you've owned both (hoping you dont have to but) if you had to buy another, which would you go for again?

im leaning towards the tamron at the moment

I'm still awaiting delivery of the Tamron, but I'll leave comments once I receive it.

If I had the money, I'd get the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS :D

I have the sigma and it's nice and sharp. I think either lens is great but you just need to get a sharp copy!

yeah i was under the impression if you get a good copy of either your laughing, the only thing is ive read more and more about faulty sigma's or the zoom locking/breaking.

Which has kind of put me off which is why im leaning towards the tamron now! unless the sigma comes up at a stonking price lol

I got mine refurbed from warehouse express for about half price!

thats where i work, and we've only got brand new stock in at the mo, and the staff discount isnt to favourable lol

I keep looking out for mail order returns coming in, but all they have is a tamron 17-50 2.8 for £299.99 which is more than i can buy it elsewhere for lol

I rarely use Warehouse Express these days...last thing I bought was the Color Checker Passport, as i could pick it up in person as local and the price was £5 cheaper than anywhere else...

As for their "bargain bin" they often reduce their price of a £300 lens by £5

I did think staff discount was quite generous at cost price of the item plus VAT...:shrug:
