Canon Flash slaving problems

Macro flashes have two lights so you need to think of them as group A and B and set the groups to this.

What are you hoping to do?

do you want to remove the ring flash away from the lens? Because in its natural position, with the ring flash acting as master, acting as keylight and fill, the 580 can act as a background light, rimlight etc.

I'm not sure I can think of a better use where an on camera 580 would trigger the MR14?

With an ETTL cord and modifier, there could be a better use of the 2 flashes, but once they're both off camera and using modifiers, it doesn't really matter which is Master and which the slave.
 
You need set CFn-5 to 1 on the MR-14 if you haven't already got that far.

Just tried that Bob - still cant get the ring to act as a slave - read the manual several times now must be misreading something

The ring will operate as a master to the 580, but not the other way round - hate to be defeated by a blessed machine :)


Just a thought the MR14 can act as a slave cant it ? - or was I given a bit of incorrect information previously

But if you were planning on firing the 580 off camera as master, presumably with a cable, then surely you can attach the cable to the mr14 and run that as master:thumbs:

It certainly can, Andrew. The A head will fire on command of the master's group A command and the B head from channel B so make sure your 580 is set to fire both channels.

Another question linked in with this latest purchase, a leaflet advertising something I know nothing about - Wireless Flash triggers.

If I buy a pair of these, could I use both my new Yongnuo and my 580EX off camera and not have a flash on the camera at all ?

I don't really understand what these triggers do so if someone could enlighten me

You mean radio triggers? They work very well and have the advantage of reliable firing in any situation - don't need line of sight, unaffected by bright ambient light outdoors, massive range.

The cheap ones £30-ish a set are great, but full manual only. Auto-TTL is generally much more expensive, though Yongnuo's 622 triggers are amazing value and getting rave reviews. They're only fully operational with Canon EXII-type guns though as they use the camera's flash control display.

They're cheap manual triggers, though good. YN 602 are similar, same as about a hundred others that have flooded on to the market in the last couple of years.

TBH, for macro work, ie close range between guns, I imagine radio triggers might have less advantage over the native Canon system.
