Canon Flash wont "pop up"

I have a 450D and the flash now wont properely release once its engaged. After 3 times of trying to pop up it comes up with a failure message. If you get a finger nail under the tab and pull gently as the flash is trying to pop up and comes up fine but i think there is a release problem with the mechanism, maybe a spring or something?

Does anyone know if this is any easy DIY fix? never been inside an SLR and id imagine its seriously complicated!
 
I had this problem with my 450D whilst I was on holiday. I found that forcing it with a finger nail as you did solved the problem, but it happened again a while later. What I found out then is that there is a micro switch under the rails of the hotshoe. I cleaned it out with a pin (camera battery removed) and that solve it, I'd guess dirt / dust can get under and cause the microswitch to become depressed.
 
Dave beat me to it, that microswitch seems to be the culprit 99 times out of a 100

Quite often happens when a flash gun has been fitted causing the switch to stay locked down
 
Happened on a 350D,400D and a 450D here. Identical problem.

It'll still come up if you stick your finger nails under it and pull whilst pressing the release button.

Fortunately i rarely if ever use flash!

I don't think its the microswitch on these - pressing the button it clicks 3 times as trying to release the flash then comes up with an error saying turn the camera off.

Yea ive just been searching the net and looks like its a very common problem!

The camera is actually away with Jessops Repair department. It cost me 25.00 to have a repair quote done and they want 56.00 to repair. So now im stuck whether to have it back unfixed and look for this switch or go ahead with the repair bill. STUCK :(

Its more annoying as i never use the flash, tempted to have it back , save myself 60 quid and live with it!
