Hello

Following the superb advice about lenses and filters I am now looking to purchase a flash. It is to go on a Canon 7d and will be used mainly for portrait work, in pubs/bars for website pictures and I am also shooting my cousins wedding next year so that is in the back of my mind. I am also going to try to have a bash at some macro work...... budget of around £100 - £150.

I would try to stretch to the Canon 430EXII at around £200 but your best all round flash is the 580EXII this will do everything you would need from a flash.
 
Look around and you could get a second hand 430EXII for around £150, perhaps less. Bonus of the 430 with your 7D is the ability to control it wirelessly without needing to buy additional kit :)
 
I have a Canon 580EX II, which is great but is out of your budget, but I also have a Nissin Di866 which is comparable to the 580. The Nissin is great, very powerful and fully featured. It can be used wirelessly with a 7D for definite because I've done it with a 7D and a 5D2. It's a fast recharger but very economical with battery power, I took over 900 photos on one set of rechargeable batteries. There's normally a few for sale on the forum at reasonable prices.

If it's still above budget though, you could do a lot worse than getting the Nissin Di622. I bought one for the wifes 550D (she's now upgraded to the 650D) and it is also a fantastic flash. It's features are comparable to the 430EX II but is available new for around £100 from various suppliers.

The specs are similar but the build quality will be less. The canon is built to go with pro bodies and L lenses and is sealed to match.

Caveat. I haven't handled the Nissin but do plan to buy some.
 
The Nissin is still of a very good build quality, it's not going to fall to bits just because it isn't a canon.

Mine fell of the light stand twice (cheap light stand not the flashes fault) and depsite a few scrapes of the body work it still works exactly as it did before.

Be careful not to get the Di866 though as this is the older version and you need the mark ii one.

Also the Nissin has an LCD screen which makes the whole process of working the flash an absolute piece of cake.
