canon flashes

Anyone give me quick idea on Canon Flashes, just come over from Nikon where I was using a SB900 which was great but i've just got the new pocket wizards so I can hi speed syc and need a canon flash otherwise I would have kept the SB900.

Is the 580EXII worth it ?

Depends what you mean "worth it".... Most Canon bodies don't have wireless ETTL built in, so the 580 acts as a commander for any other OCF units if you want to use ETTL.

It is currently the top flash unit available, I make do with a 430, but will, as soon as i have the money, be getting a 580 to compliment it. It has ample power for most situations, and it rotates 180 degrees in both directions

If you are not intending to go the ETTL route, you could use your existing units....

Ettl will be done through the pocket wizards so wont need a commander mode. whats the different between the I & II 580EX's ?

Weather sealing, different (better) way of mounting to camera, faster and quieter recycle times.

If using a multi flash set up the 580 I and II can be used as a master or a slave while the 430s can only be used as slaves.

The mark I guns used a screw to lower the locking pins but the mark IIs use a switch. Much quicker and easier.
