Is there any way to tell the type of focusing screen just by looking at it (no box)?

All I know it is one of the plain (and clean) laser mate for 1D/Ds but I have no idea what generation it is, and hence what CF setting need to use. I thought I would use it in 1D, as the old one is not in a very good state thanks to somebody else, and if I could save £35 this would be a bonus. I had to get new, then perhaps another EC-D for me, unless they hinder AF in any way.

It looks like the newly acquired 24-105mm is better suited for 1.3x so I may as well clean up the camera now.

It'll be an EC-CIII or EC-CIV....depends when the body was released.
AF isn't affected as the light path to the sensors doesn't go near the screen.

It is nice to know that AF will OK. So that leaves out the metering, which normally requires compensation anyway.

It is unlikely to be CIV, as it originally came from something a bit older - that's all I know. It could be Ec-CIII, or -N, or even -R or -S - any way to narrow it down? I can't see any markings anywhere.
Perhaps I will eventually get -D, but for now, what setting is best to go for?
 
The EC-R is very different in that it only has the centre spot and no oval for the AF region. The EC-S I have has an S engraved on the tab (not conclusive though). That leaves the various incarnations of the EC-C and the sole version of the EC-N (which is brighter).
