Canon full frame fish eye?

I am thinking of getting a fish eye of some description for use at a music festival, should be ideal for stage and crowd shots.
But with it being a low use lens, i can't really warrant big money.

It looks like the samyang 8mm is getting a lot of praise at the moment. But will it be ok on a full frame body?
 
I think those are DX system lenses. If you need full-frame you might to want to look at the Sigma 15mm - which is more expensive, but well rated. Another option is the Russian-made manual focus 'Zenitar' lens (around 150.00 on eBay).
 
I just came across a zenitar on ebay, just looking for some sample imnages now. So that might be the way to go. Cheers.


Failing that, how would the samyang perform on a 1.3 crop?

Hmmm, so it appears the samyang is a good lens, but you need to be prepared to crop quite a lot to lose the massive vignette, the zenitar will be fine, but quality can be very hit and miss depending on the copy, and for a bit more money, the sigma 15mm would be an ideal hassle free solution.
 
Just purchased a zenitar, should be here in a couple of days. Fingers crossed it will be ok.
 
Yes, the 8-15L, but it is 10x the price.
Even the canon 15mm is too expensive for me to buy on a whim.

If i get on with this and find it actually useful, then i'll upgrade it.
 
No, it was a 2 week delivery from them. I ordered one from the states a bit cheaper and 2 day delivery.

Plus should there be anything wrong, i imagine i would have better luck dealing with the Americans rather than Russians. :lol:
 
But produces a circular image. I would rather not have to crop that much if i can avoid it.

Really? I would have thought there's plenty of Russian 'customer service' in the UK!
 
I was hoping that the price of the 15mm fisheye was going to drop a bit now that the 8-15mm is out...
 
The Samyang 8mm is not a full frame lens. When I tried one on my D50 at Focus I asked the question because I fancied one for my D3.

This Samyang 8mm f/3.5 Aspherical ED MC Fish-eye lens is an excellent quality lens that represents very good value. Fantastic fish-eye effect, it allows the photographer to create out-of-the-ordinary images by emphasizing depth of field and perspective (180º angle of view ).

This is a "full-frame fish-eye" which means that it covers the entire frame to the corners (APS-C sensor)!

Well I was mis informed by the people that were selling them. They probably missed a sale there.
 
I think it is a confusing use of full frame there.

There are 2 types of fisheye:
180 degrees in a circle in the middle of the frame with black vignette.
180 degrees corner to corner.

The focal lengths of the circle ones are smaller (for the sane size sensor). The post above mentions full frame for APS-C sensors, which are cropped as opposed to 35mm full frame sensors.
 
No, it is very badly worded. On a 1.6 crop you will get a full image, on a full frame sensor you will get a circular image.

I found this example of the samyang used on a 5d and 1d while i was looking into it.

On a 1d there is very little to crop out to get a full image, on a 5d it's quite a lot. On a 1.6 crop wou wont have to crop at all.
 
That refers to having the permanent hood machined off.

Ok of you want a circular image, but doesn't seem to be much use if you want a 2:3 crop.
 
Yep, ideal for your camera.

I was toying with the idea of buying a crop body, but it seemed a bit much just to be able to use the samyang. :lol:
