Guys,

I have a friend thinking about buying additional lenses for his Canon G10. He is looking at the following:

http://www.lensmateonline.com/newsite/G10.html

Does anyone have any experience of either the LensMate stuff or indeed the official canon additions?

He is looking for recommendations, he is not even sure whether Wide angle or Telephoto would be best. I suspect he will ultimately need both as he enjoys both portraits AND landscapes.

Gary.

I used Lensmate for my convertors and stuff for my S3-IS and G7 when i had them.

The quality of the stuff is fantastic and better than the official Canon stuff (machined Aluminium as opposed to Plastic from Canon) and have never had a problem in the half-dozen or so times i've had dealings with them.

:agree:

I had the Lensmate adapter plus grips on the G9 and the quality is top notch, far better than the plastic Canon stuff.

The only reason I haven't bought the adapter for my G10 is that it wouldn't fit in the case....

I use the Lensmate 58mm lens adapter to mount filters on the front of my G9. I have one for a polariser and another with a UV filter - strictly for protective purposes if I'm on the beach or anywhere particularly wet or dusty. The G9 lens assembly leaks dust in like a sieve, and I have no reason to believe the problem has been addressed in the G10. I am extremely careful to keep the lens closed whenever I'm not actually shooting, and never carry it in my pocket without first putting it away in its case. I had to return my first G9 after it filled itself with dust bunnies after 3,000 shutter operations.

The Lensmate adapters are excellent quality. Postage, import tax etc. make it quite an expensive purchase for what is essentially just an aluminium tube, but better than the Canon plactic jobs. They also do a custom hot shoe cover, and a stick-on grip enhancer for the G9.

I wouldn't bother getting a telephoto adapter for the G9, as I think it'd be unusable unless you were using a tripod, even with the build-in image stabilization. The wide angle lens would be very useful however, especially on the G9, which has a pretty crappy wide angle capacity. I believe the G10 has a more useful range - with wider angle and less telephoto length, to it might be more suitable for an add-on telephoto lens.

I have to say, by far the best feature of the Canon G9 is it's remarkable macro capability. You can get super close, with great depth of field, and the quality of some of the macro shots I've taken rival those of my D300 and 105mm VR Micro. This is one area where the irritating shutter lag isn't a total pain.

I have the 52mm Lensmate adaptor and use it to mount a circular polariser for my somewhat ancient A610. I would agree that the Lensmate converter is way better than the pathetic plastic tube that Canon produce.

I also bought a Raynox DCR 730 wide angle lens. Here's a comparison shot showing the increased angle of view when fitted.

I bought the Raynox from Digital Toy Shop rather than Lensmate as the former are a Spanish company and therefore there is no duty payable (plus the shipping was a bit less).

Some more pics taken using the Raynox:

Flash; where did you get that fabulous case for the G10? was it expensive?

It came from a Canon dealer in the Far East, it was about £65-70 by the time all the duty etc was paid. There were a lot of them on Fleabay in the UK for a while, but they are fakes, usually plastic.

I'll have to hit the Bay, see if I can get one. I've used a black one for a good while, but I always hankered after the Sam Browne look! Thanks for your help.

The plastic fakes shouldn't be more than £10-12, but the leather one is just sooo nice that it's worth the extra :D

Gary, I have a Raynox DCR-1540 telecon 1.54x lens, which was a present to go on my G7, which was then stolen. It's never been used. This one https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/flex-sign-in-done/026-4636015-9809258

I also have a Lensmate G7 adapter and step ring, but that presumably won't fit a G10. If it's of any interest, I'll make it available in the For Sale section ;)
