Noise reduction taking precidence over megapixels?

<staggers backwards, stunned>

A *reduction* in megapixels from 14.7 to 10?

Thank you Canon!

Lets hope the G12 has 8MP, a larger image sensor, a larger maximum aperture, a wider angle lens and less telephoto range.

If only they can fix the crappy lens sealing problem and keep dust out of the thing...

The flip screen is a massively cool feature imo too.

They removed it and put it back again. Just like they did with RAW support. They seem to learn by their mistakes rather than actually asking users what they want...

But "blink detection"....?:shake:

Who knows, it might be the difference between making a few sales or not.

If it doesn't affect the image quality or usability of the camera, why does it matter?

Just like video mode. Never understood why it annoys people so much. Just don't use it!

And SLRist, even if they make a mistake and correct it, it's better than consistently going downhill!

A commendable decision indeed - now all they need to do is apply that rationale to give a crop sensor SLR that gives decent images at ISO 6400 :D

I'll be intrigued to see how it's received by the megapixel frenzied masses..

The g10 is full of modes and functions that very few people would actually need or understand how to use - in my opinion.
Most of us just need something neat and compact that takes good quality pics. The g10 does do that, but press the wrong button and who knows where you will end up!

I thought the idea of compacts was that they were easy to use? I just don't see the point of technology for technology's sake.

Because some people use it, that's my point.

My phone has the ability to play music.
I don't ever use it.
All of my friends who have this phone do.

That's my point. I could end up in the music menu, shock horror, so I'd exit it. Not the end of the world. Similarly with the G10/G9/G11/5dmk2 video/blink detection situation!

The G-series cameras aren't for people who don't understand what most of the modes and functions do. They're for serious amateurs who want something smaller than an SLR so they can carry it around more easily, with the ability to adjust every single setting in the same way they can with an SLR. It's all about how much control you want over your pics.

Canon sell plenty of other cameras for a fraction of the price of a G9/10/11 which are neat and compact and take good quality pics. The G-series has bells and whistles for the more fastidious among us.

George.

I entirely agree.

So why have a blink detection mode? (for example). Does any SLR have this?

I've been using SLR's for over 30 years and I've never come across one with as many (pointless) modes and functions as the g10.

Fair point. It's in the same league as 'smile detection' which some P&S cameras are using now.

As long as it doesn't comprimise any other features, I'm not fussed.

With apparently a physically bigger ('40%' more area) sensor than the G10, offering more resolution and an expectation that the 'informed' camera buyer will understand - this I expect Canon have read the market right.

(I like the look of the S90 - same sensor, an f2 lens and pocketable)

Why not? Panasonic have been doing the same thing with the Lumix. Hopefully it'll improve the low light performance and noise problems.

The majority of these features are software based. If you can code it in then why not? It's not like they're buying into expensive hardware technology for these things to happen.

Still regard the G6 as one of their better efforts in the G series, they took a right old kicking over the unpopular G7, G6 S/H prices went sky high and I remember them approaching £500 on fleabay. Oddly there was no G8 but along came G9 with Raw that they had stupidly not retained on the G7.

I suspect it will fire ok but the only control you'll have will be whatever you have on the flash head itself.

I'm thrilled to bits with the spec of the G11. I've had my well used G2 for the past 7 years, and would have updated before now but for the high ISO noise and lack of swivelling LCD. I'm stunned that Canon have taken a "less is more" approach to the megapixel race, but whether it's good judgement or marketing driven, I welcome it unreservedly.

At £569 it's a shade expensive for me at present, but I don't think that will stop it flying off the shelves (at £450 I'd pre-order). If the performance at ISO >80 lives up to our expectations, I think it fills it's specialist market niche perfectly.

Well done Canon. It will be mine!

Cheers

George

some of them take 3-4 photos in quick succession, and then rifle through them looking for 'smiles' and non-blinks. then deletes the rest...I think

I hope they do good detection on their battery status then!
flashClick-flashClick-flashClick-flash.... thud

Talk about shutter lag!
