Canon G12 announced

Looks nice but I wish they had found a way to make the lens start at f2.0 like the s90, or extended the zoom range slightly.

The High Dynamic range function looks interesting, although the Fuji f200/f70 don't need to take 3 photos to get this effect.

No, they just haven't done enough really, the lens is still 2.8-4.5 and should be 2.8 throughout the range, the viewfinder hasn't been worked up so is still not much more use than an aiming device.
The levels handy, the newer IS is an improvement, but I still don't see it as being much of an upgrade over the G11.

I agree it looks like a bit or a warm-over (although I love the idea of shooting auto-HDR of everything :D ) but the problem with the lens is one of basic concept I think.

One big advantage of the small compact format is that the lenses can be very small and I think Canon has taken this to mean that the lens must retract flush to the body with this model. If they gave it any more aperture, it wouldn't do that.

I think that is a key appeal of this camera compared to say one of the tiny little mirrorless EVILs - the cameras are very small but the lenses stick out a mile. The G12 is just about pocketable.

I like your description of the viewfinder 'aiming device'. But it's better than nothing, which is what just about every other rival has, and at least means you can use the camera discretely at eye level, instead of standing there like a pillock, looking like the Statue of Liberty.

I'm thinking I want one... :)

PS I wonder if they cut the lens back from 140mm equivalent, what the options might be? I think 24-70mm f/2-2.8 might fit - I'd pay good money for that

I'd agree that wider aperture might be nice but my experience with the G11 is that the sensor is too small to allow for DOF type effects and the low light capabilities (using high ISO) of the G11 were fine as they were (and better than the G10).

I would miss the longer focal length if it was sacrificed for wider aperture as Hoppy suggests.

Personally, the G11/G12 offers what the evil things don't - a truly pocketable camera that can offer most of the control of a DSLR (well, except DOF effects :D).

I love my G11, even if it is made by C@n*n :D

True enough, you can't have it all ways. Canon must have researched all the lens options and decided that was the one G12 buyers were likely to want at the price point (not that they asked me :( ). I think they have an f/2 lens in some other nasty little thing anyway.

It would be nice to have interchangeable lens models, though I guess they would be horribly expensive and that would put the G12 kind of in the EVIL camp.

I keep forgetting that camera manufacturers are out to make money, and they seem to have made the G12 just good enough for me to put it on my Xmas list :)
