Canon grip advice.....

Well Russell it's a lottery, isn't it? IMHO what you should consider is if something went wrong with the grip and caused a problem with your camera. It can happen and in my opinion, not worth the risk.
I had an OEM grip that went sour and caused a problem with my 5D2. Canon replaced the motherboard of the camera and also repaired the grip under warranty. I would hate to think what the cost would be if I had to fork out for it. From what I can remember of the part of the paperwork which they kept, it was a few hundred pounds.

Having owned a 3rd party grip for my 450D and the canon one for the 500D I would buy an original every time, I replaced the 3rd party one with a genuine one just after christmas.

Its the first grip I have owned, so cannot compare it, but it seems just perfect to me - I asked on various forums and this make kept on being recommended and so far so good - I even use a cheapo battery, which is also doing me well, though both are still pretty new

Given the cost of both, I am well chuffed.
I am sure there is the possibility of a problem, and cannot deny that Houston 1863 gives good advice, but for me it has worked out just fine, and I have lots of cash left over !
EDIT - Just noticed that the battery is even cheaper now !

have a battery grip I belive from opteka bought off ebay. Had it for 6 months and all was fine until last Sunday during a major photoshoot camera went abosolutley bezerk. It was taking 20 sec pics and never recording them on card, it was sort of hiccuping and so on. I freaked out obvouilsy especially with the model looking at me 
so I removed the grip and all was fine after that.
Well Im not sure if it was the grip but to be honest Im loath to test a 49 quid gajet to see if it still works on a much more expensive and so far the only one I got camera. So from now on I decided no more grips.
