i all

I am new to photography and i currently have a fujiFilm Finepix A820, which is ok i guess. However i find it very hit and miss in low light situations.

I am going to vegas in August so would like a camera that will do good night shots etc. I have a budget of about £150 and seen the Canon IXUS 120 IS camera on Jessops website for around that price reduced. Is it any good? anyone heard of it??

Thanks all

chris

All (ultra)compact cameras struggle with low-light situations, due to the smaller size of the sensor they use.

Ofcourse, you could use flash, but I think that's not what you want. You could use a tripod and a long exposure time to capture, say.. neon signs/lights, static objects better in low-light. Ofcourse people, cars, moving objects will not remain in focus.

Or you could shoot at high ISO, but that will probably leave you with a rather noisy picture.

So do you think there is no point me getting this canon?? i cant really afford a higher end camera

Well, you can clean up noise later to some degree, but perhaps some others could help out here too? Guys? Hello? ;)

I have an old Ixus. They are great P&S cameras.

I guess for Vegas you are wanting to take pictures of the neon lights.

Really this is all about technique. A flash isn't much use in this instance. You really want a stable place for the camera. Tripod, Gorillapod, Partners Head? :)

Shooting this way isn't too noisy. But yes these small sensors are pretty bad in low light situations with noise.

Here's an example London night photography of mine with an Ixus:

Forced flash off. Rested the camera on wife's head and took the shot! LOL.
