First off, my apologies for starting another “what camera” thread. :D

I currently use a 350D and have been very happy with it, but think its time for me to up grade. I’m looking for something with great image quality and bigger viewing screen (350Ds is tiny) with live view. I’ve around £1k to indulge in my photo hobby.

I currently take …

Landscapes 80%
Wildlife 10%
Macro 5%
Family snaps 5%

Lenses
Sigma 10-20mm (Hardly ever off the camera)
Canon 24-105mm
Canon 100mm macro
2x extender
Canon 50mm (hardly used)
Wish list Canon 100-400mm

So I started to look at the 7D then the 5D (5Dmk2 is to expensive) then the 50D then… my head started to ache, so I would be very grateful for some advise on where to spend my hard earned.

Would prefer new but don’t mind used. I don’t think FF is a must as have been happy with the cropped 350D and wide 10-20mm

Many thanks
Paul :)

I think all those options will do the job, but the biggest improvement you will see picture image wise, is FF. The original 5D is comfortably within your budget, but the others are good too. I think if you went for a 50D the biggest improvement you would see is with the quality of the gear, but the image quality improvement may not be as big. You`re happy with the image quality you are already getting, so it`s a tricky one to advise. Whatever you get, enjoy.

Just a quick edit, your Sigma 10-20 would need to be replaced if you went FF.

How about the 500D. live view, great screen, cropped sensor and same size as your present camera which you are obviously happy with
Still got cashback offer on I think and money left over for new lens or kit.

Sure someone will say get a 450D, but the screen isn't as good for live view and why not get the newest model if you have the cash

I'd say the 50D looks perfect and spend the rest on a decent tripod (if you haven't got one all ready) and some grad filters perhaps.

Personally from your list i 'd go for a 5D MK1 - but you wont be able to use the 10-20mm as its a EF-S fit lens so you'll need to replace it with a EF fit lens, but your 24-105 will give the same FOV as the the sigma at 15mm when set at 24mm

Personally, I think a 50D would be found lacking as a serious landscape body and it's one genre where bigger is better in terms of sensor size....I would guess that most serious landscape togs are using medium or large format bodies but a 5D or 1Ds would be a step in the right direction.

I'd definitely suggest looking into a 5D. The only issue with that is if you want the same field of view as your 10-20, you're going to need to look at something like the Canon 17-40 L, or if you have kidneys/children/etc to sell, you could look at the 16-35 f/2.8.

There's also a Tamron 17-something that comes highly regarded too if memory serves.

So what I'd recommend is selling the Sigma 10-20 (and the canon 50mm if you're not using it), that should get you up to at least £1300, which should be around enough for a 5d and 17-40 L!

Chris

If all you want is a bigger screen and image quality then your looking at 40D/50D.

Are you looking at 5D and 7D because they are fancy and pro, or are you looking for the image quality and professional equipment. There is distinct advantages for you to go full frame, but they are costly and you will need to change your 10-20.

Speaking as a 450D user who has dabbled in landscapes, I would say go 50D, based on your budget. Bear in mind, however, that this is a significantly heavier camera, so I would also agree with the suggestion made above that you invest in a tripod, if you haven't already.

A full frame body would be ideal for your type of photography, either a 1Ds mk1 or a 5D mk 1, both about the same price, I had a 1Ds mk 1 and the biggest drawback was battery life, try both and see how the extra bulk of the 1 series suits you, my wife wont use it as it's too heavy and she prefers the 5d size, although she now has a G11 which is ideal for her!! (and me sometimes...!!!)

Another vote here for the 5D MK1. Got mine recently, it's super for all the things you would use it for. Move the Siggy on, but I'd keep the 50mm. Mines a different lens on FF !

Even though I have an 7D, for landscapes I would suggest either a 5D or an 1DsII (had one and is better than the 5D in my opinion). There is an 1DsII on sale from a large 2nd hand retailer at the moment for just over £1200 which is around the price of the 7D so I assume you can afford it. A 5D on the other hand can be found for less than £800 so that will allow you to get another lens :)

Many thanks for the great response guys. So basically it’s a toss up between the 5D and 50D.

I didn’t realise that I cant use the Sigma 10-20 on the 5D and wanted to keep it as I’m passing on the 350D to my daughter (sharing lenses).

I’ve done a comparison between the two suggested body’s : (please correct me if this is incorrect)

5D
Better IQ
No live view
No flash (I know it’s a pro camera but an extra cost)
2.5” screen
Weight 895 g

50D
Live view
3” screen
Weight 730 g

I can see that the 5D would make more sense due to the FF, but I really wanted the bigger screen and live view.

Why do I want live view? I do a lot of low to the ground (wet knee) pics and I’m getting old and fat, :D so live view would help me a lot.

So the 50D seems to be the one I’m swaying towards. The 5Dmk2 has the live view but its way over my budget.

Many many thanks for your help and input. The TP community is ace

Cheers
Paul

Why dont you buy a Seagull angle viewfinder?

Personally i dont know if i'd upgrade any further in crop sensor than a 40d, i'd save a little longer.
Sell your Sigma 10-20 and Canon 50mm, then purchase a secondhand 5d MK2 and a Canon 17-40L

Also it depends if you want a built in flash?

Now why didn’t I think of that! Great idea, so the 5D is back in the running then

You mean the 5D MK11 ....come on you know its the right choice. Dont let that money burn a hole in your pocket when you are so close to getting an up to date and far better camera.

Remember the screen on the 5d MK1 isnt much better than your 350d

If you were planning on selling the landscape shots (or most of them) I would agree that the 5D is the one to go for - maximum image quality.

If you are not, the 50d will give you great results, image quality is still fabulous and will still produce professional quality images albeit not to quality of 5d. In addition the 50d is a much more flexible camera. Where the 5d does a few things excellently, the 50d will do many things very well.

Agreed the 5DmkII would make perfect sense, its just the price I cant do + wide lens + flash :'(

I’d love to make money from shots, but its easier said than done. Plus this is a hobby not a job. :D

Starting to sway back to the 50D again now

Realistically how often do you use your flash? I am guessing not a lot if you are happy with the result from the on-board flash (I hope that doesn't sound insulting). Another way to look at it, is you could get a flash to match that of a built in flash for between £50/£100.
On the lens front, you could quite easily swap the 10-20 for an equivalent length with no outlay or maybe even cheaper as 15mm/17mm is a more common lens.

I think the best advise would be to go to a local meet or camera club and try other peoples cameras.

Another vote for the 5D and 17-40L. My 17-40L is truly wonderful on full frame - blows me away at f8 (sweet spot).

Alternatively, for about £1300 (you would get £300+ for your 10-22) you could get a used 5D Mk II and save for a wider lens, your 24-105 will tide you over nicely in the meantime

In your situation I'd probably go this way too, I have both the above lenses and have not been disappointed by either.

You mention on camera flash being a preference, tbh the only lenses you have that that would really be appropriate for are the 50 and the Sigma.

In your situation I'd probably hand the 350 and the 50 over to my daughter, sell the Sigma (unless she is likely to use it as much as you) and put the money towards a 5d MkI and a Speedlight. I'd then be looking at adding a prime and a decent tripod for landscape work once I had got used to the camera.
