Canon lens advice, anyone?

Hi all
Basically, I just got myself a 30D second hand, and I have a couple of kit lenses that came with a Canon film SLR about 3-4 years back. I was pretty much wondering what would be the best option, sell my current lenses and buy 1-2 better ones, or just keep what I have.

Selling direct to a reseller, I can get roughly £100 for the 2, and they are:
Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6
Canon EF 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6

Now, I have no real interest in nature or sports photography, so feel that the telephoto lens is a waste right now. It's been used for a couple of experimental moon photos, and that's it.

I was considering possibly something along the lines of the EF-S 18-55mm IS, and the 50mm f1.8. I realise this would cost about £140, and thats all I can really afford to spend at the minute. The nifty appeals to me, as I want to experiment and try some portrait/nighttime photos, so the large aperture is a plus. The 18-55, I'm not massively sure about.

Any opinions would be great, even suggesting alternatives to what I listed. As I said, right now a telephoto is not needed. I'm hoping to be going to the British GP later this year, but that leaves plenty of time to invest in a lens for that. Or I might just hire one for it!

For what you want to do, with a modest budget, you have undoubtedly picked the best two lenses. They also happen to be pretty good, and top value.

You'll need a long one for Silverstone - hire a 100-400L :)
 
Cheers for the advice. Hopefully I'll be there for the full race weekend (plenty of time to get at least a few decent pics!), and hoping to sit myself at Maggots/Beckets or similar, though I'll make sure to wonder round to other areas.
 
I'm thinking that perhaps you could save by forgoing the 50/1.8. Haven't used that one myself ( yeah I know who am I to speak :lol: ) but you have an excellent all-rounder in the 18-55 IS. If it's too dark indoors then just use the pop-up flash. You can then save up for other glass.

If you sell your lenses on ebay you should get about £40 & £80 respectively (this is assuming that you take many pictures of their condition as well as provide a good write up) so an offer of £100 isn't so bad.

Keep an eye on the classifieds here as you may be able to pick up the two lenses that you specify for cheaper than you think.

A word of warning about the classifieds though, it gets expensive :)
 
How about the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 sounds ideal for your purposes. never owned one, but all the people who have really rate it

Sell what you have now, forget the other two you mentioned and have a look at the Tamron
 
Another lens to think about, maybe a little further down the line is the 28-135IS lens. I used to have one and was very pleased with the results and I think Ian (Kerso) on here does the White boxed version (split from a kit) for a very good price.

With regards to Silverstone if you are going to hire one, then I would probably do it sooner rather than later as I suspect a lot get hired out over that weekend. If you're thinking of hiring one from Stuart @ Lens for hire, drop him a message on here or phone h and ask him what he thinks about the 2 lenses you have mentioned. I'm sure he has had time with them both and got feedback from those that have hired them.

Hi, In a bored moment have just had a look on the Mifsuds "used equipment" site and noticed that they have a Tamron 24-135 f3.5/5.6 for sale, reportedly in good nick for 169GBP.

I have this lens and there is no way that I would let it go for that sort of money.

Basically, it gives you a lot of focal length range, is reasonably fast (at the short end) annd has great build quality. It is not "L" glass but at that price you would not expect it to be!

The people at Fredmiranda give this lens a 9 rating by the way.

You could do A LOT worse.

As ever, just my 2p worth.
