Hi,

After finding a wheeled pilots case that will accomodate my laptop+business stuff and (more importantly) my camera whether I am travelling in UK or flying I am now looking for a small, light (in both senses) travel lens

Considering 3 options

28mm f1.8 USM
35mm f2.0
50mm f1.4 USM

On a 7D body. Pictures, anything. This would be my lens that I would take whenever I travel on business but also looking for lowish f as it would also be my main indoor. Anyone care to comment?
 
If primes are a must then I would go with the 50mm. I myself have this lens which performs fantastically in low light. Or you may consider the Sigma version which receives really good reviews also. The other two may be a little too wide for my liking.

If it's also going to be your main indoor then you would have to consider the 35 which is closest to a traditional standard lens (50mm on full frame) because unless your main indoor shots are all portraiture then the 50 on a 7d is a short telephoto which will be very restrictive in anything other than very large rooms. Look through the exif data of your past shots to get an idea of the focal length you shoot most. It will give you a very good indicator of what you need.
 
Just wish that the 35 wasn't like rocking horse 5h1t.

No one seems to have one in stock to try out.
 
i would consider one of the fast standard zooms. Stabilisation on the newer lenses can give as much as 4 stops!

Ofc no good for moving subjects but more flexible than just one prime.
 
Yes, I've tried the 24-105 and the 17-55 and liked both. But at present still in 'love' with my 17-40. Just looking for a very small quality lens for travel with me when on business.
 
how about Sigma 30mm f/1.4
 
I have recently looked at images from the 28 f/1.8 and I am impressed with the quality! If the 35mm is out of stock then I'd deff go with 28mm especially as you will be able to crop easily having the 18MP sensor on the 7D plus great for indoor work.

I went for the 50 f1.4.

Tried it out and was just blown away with the quality and low light ability.
I also think it compliments my 17-40L very well. Whenever I am out and about on hills with tripod then the 17-40 will shine. When out and about in general (like this week, indoor industry show in Hanover) the 50 1.4 is the babe.

As per Tom I'd recommend the Siggy 30mm f1.4, for general use, creative aperture and low light use, it's also a nice compact thing with HSM which allows full time manual focus. Although having said all that the Siggy 50mm f1.4 has been on my camera (APS-C) for months now but it is a bit restrictive if you can't back up far enough.
 
Update:
50mm f 1.4 is a great lens..But. For walking around exhibition halls and events on a cropped body it's a no. Just couldn't get back quite far enough to get the shots I wanted.

I should have known really but I just loved the f1.4

Anyhow took back to Jessops, was within 7 days on my credit deal so got a full refund. They have promised to call me as soon as their new stock of 35mm f2's arrive.

Almost tempted but it is a VERY expensive last one.

It is a quite expensive, more than I paid (though I got mine through Amazon) not as much discount as usual but I suppose its because its from a market place seller not direct...

Park cameras have them in stock? Could try it out if you don't mind the drive to West Sussex? Mind you, last time I visted their showroom, I came back with a VERY empty wallet!! :lol:
