Canon lens choice - 17-55 EF-S F/2.8 OR 24-105 F/4 L?

Right I am looking at upgrading my kit and looking at getting a new lens this/next week and have decided its going to be between those for now.

I will be keeping crop sensor camera's for the next few years at least as I cant afford FF and the whole expense of the lenses all the time as its not finacially viable.

I am defiantly going to be getting a 70-200 F2.8 II USM some time this year but i need a smaller lens for now.

It will be used to car shoots/events and maybe for some drifting.

I used a 24-105 the other day and really liked it apart from how heavy it was but i got some nice results with it I thought but then some people have really said its not one to get.

Where as I have never used the 17-55 but have seen amazing reviews but then it lacks the zoom for being a more al-rounder.

If i got the 17-55 i would be only replacing the kit lens i have but if i got the 24-105 i would also be selling my 28-90mm as it should be covered.

Does anyone have experience with both or either as i can get them for similar prices and im not bothered if i get a "grey import".

The lenses i use atm are - 10-20mm sigma/ 18-55mm kit lens/ 50mm f/1.8 / 28-90mm USM / 70-300mm III

Hi,

What focal length are you using for the majority of your shots now - if you could do with a bit more reach from the 18-55 kit lens, then the 24-105 is certainly worth looking at, but if you take a lot of shots in the 18-24mm range, then you'd find it very restrictive and the 17-55 would be worth looking at.

Weight wise, the 17-55 is 645g v 670g for the 24-105 (lens only).
 
I used to have a 17-55 but switched to a 24-70. Focal length wise, 24mm on a crop often isn't wide enough and I wouldn't have made the switch had I not got the 10-22 to cover such situations. I see you have the Sigma 10-20 so should also have the wide end covered.

Aside from the focal length differences, you need to consider the other differences between the two lenses. The 17-55 is a stop faster than the 24-105 but on the flip side, the build quality is inferior and it lacks weather sealing. The build quality and weather sealing are the two main reasons I switched to the 24-70 and, whilst I wasn't sacrificing a stop in my case, I was losing the IS but I've never looked back to be honest. If the 17-55 focal length is enough for you and you don't need the additional stop, get the 24-105.
 
Cheers guys. Well ive been reading and everything and the 17-55 is the one i need the most atm so ive got one of them

But ive decided the I do need the 24-105 for when i go on random walks and for out door shows with more space for the zoom so i am going to see what money I have after the 17-55 and its going to be a toss up weather to get the 85mm prime or 24-105 1st as I will end up getting both.

But they will have to wait for a while so hopefully be able to get the lens for next week and get some shots done and testing

I did look at the 24-70 but that cant be afforded in my budget with the 70-200 f/2.8
