Canon lens consolidation thoughts?

Following a change from my 7D to a 5DIII (arriving this week - woohoo!), and some spurious purchases in the past, I find myself with some duplicate and potentially redundant lenses.

10-22mm EF-S -> Going to my son, with the 7D.

Which will leave me with:

16-35 L f/2.8 II <-- New, to replace the 10-22 on my FF (which I used a lot)
24-70mm L f/2.8 Mk 1 (old, but bold and gold - have had this since my 10D days) <-- used a lot, and will use even more on FF I'm sure.
24-105mm f/4 L IS - recent spurious acquisition
70-200mm f/4 L IS <- don't use this v.much
100mm f/2.8 L IS Macro - Not used much, not a bugs guy.
85mm f/1.8 - have barely used this

I shoot allsorts - travel, urban scenes, portraits, occasional weddings in probably that order.

On the 7D, most used lens was the 10-22, so the 16-35 is staying.
On the medium telephoto - not sure if I'll keep both the 24-70 and 24-105mm. The latter is much newer, the 24-70 quite old now, but perfect cond. I'll struggle to choose between these two! I'll get more use of these on FF. Thoughts?

With 4 lenses vying for 85mm-100mm coverage, I sense the 85mm 1.8 is probably first to go. I hardly use it now, and kept it for low light stuff, which i don't do a lot of. The 100mm macro could step in if I needed 2.8 in that f/l.

Although I don't use it a lot, my 70-200 is a great lens, albeit f/4 max aperture. I can live with this as used to own the mk1 2.8 and sold it because it was just too big and too loud (in the white sense - I hate white lenses).

I just sense that I could sell on some redundancy and maybe put funds towards some studio lighting gear - I hate to let gear go though.

Help this lens hoarder! :) What would you change?

I'd get rid of 24-105mm as long as you are happy with 24-70mm. The latter is better lens, and the IS on the former is not particularly modern.

If you are not into macro - you could get rid of all three teles and get 70-200mm f/2.8 II. Perfect for portraits, but equally so are each one of your existing ones. You don't need to shoot bugs to justify 100mm. I have shot maybe 10 of them in 8 years, but I do some floral shoots (mostly for fun)

I'm not sure if I'd prefer the 24-70 over the 24-105, but I agree with the second part of the advice. :thumbs:
 
Seriously, I wouldn't change anything until you have got the camera and used it a bit. The effective focal length range will change a lot on full-frame, and it will also allow your lenses to show what they can do and really shine :thumbs: Trying to double-guess how it all will shake out is difficult, and depends very much on personal priorities. Then when you make changes, only change one lens at a time.

Just a couple of comments. If you only use f/2.8 for low light (as opposed to shallow depth of field effects) then that's only one stop up on the ISO and the 5D3 will give your that and more vs 7D. I'm not much into bugs either and sold two macros for a set of extension tubes on a 70-200L 4 IS. Very happy with that choice, in fact prefer the extra versatility of the zoom plus IS.

Big :thumbs: to getting some studio lights. They will take you into a whole new creative area. Lots of ways of going about that, and plenty of good reading in the lighting forum here :)

I think you should hoard for a couple of months until you're used to your new camera and can be sure what lenses you will and wont use. Selling now may only lead to regrets and hunting for a bargain in the future, so only sell if you're very sure :D

Based on the above:
16-35 L f/2.8 II = travel, urban scenes
24-70mm L f/2.8 Mk 1 = travel, weddings
24-105mm f/4 L IS = travel, weddings
70-200mm f/4 L IS = weddings
85mm f/1.8 = portraits

So I'd suggest selling:
100mm f/2.8 L IS Macro

Then wait until you have your new camera and decide whether to keep the 24-70 or 24-105 and sell the other
 
I'd got with keeping the 85mm, its a lovely portrait length on full frame and a hidden gem of canons lens range.
 
Wow - lots of food for thought! Thanks. Think I'll hold on for now as suggested and see how things shake out. Not keen on selling the 100mm macro yet as although I don't do much in the way of bugs, I do like detail shots and I like the close focussing that gives.

The 24-105mm seems a really nice lens in the short time I've owned it, but I do like my 24-70mm a lot (old friend) and I would hate to lose 2.8. I might keep them both and certainly will in the short term.

Not hugely keen on swapping out for a 70-200 2.8, as I owned one (mk1) previously and just found it too big/heavy/visible for my kind of photography.

Am looking into the Studio lights in any case - would be nice to sell something to fund it having just bought the camera and 16-35, but I'm in no rush so will take the advice to hold on for a bit until I've found out what I'm using most.
