I have aquired a Canon 75-300 f4/5.6. zoom lens. Marks on the collar are, ef 1.4-5.6 and mk three. I thought the ultrasonic models were mk3 and the older ones like mine mk2 can anyone put me right. ID code on this lens is 5600054D.

It should read 1:4-5.6 which indicates the aperture value throughout the zoom range ... f/4 @ 75mm to f/5.6 @ 300mm.

The Mk III has 'Ultrasonic' clearly labelled in gold on the side of the barrel. Not sure about the Mk II but if the lettering is missing, I would think that it lacks the USM.

According to Canon's website there are two versions of the 75-300 f4-5.6 MKIII, one with a USM AF system the other with a micro motor AF system.

Always worth a check, this site lists every lens Canon have ever produced:

I don't think the USM makes a great deal of difference on these lenses TBH

Thanks all. I had read all sorts of horror stories about this lens, but after giving it a go I find it to be not too bad at all.
