I have a Canon eos 1000D with the original kit lens, I am looking to get a new lens but not sure what one to get. I'm very new to photography so not looking to spend a stupid amount just yet.

I dont have a certain area of photography that I'm in to so I'm looking for a decent all round lens. Please help lol.
 
Anthony, depending what your defenition of a stupid amount is, I would say a great all round lens would be the 24-105mm. Some will disagree but for me, its my general walk about lens.

What do you find restricting about the lens you have now? Lack of range? Not wide enough? Not fast enough? And also budget will help us decide what's right for you.
 
Range, wide, and not quick enough. I take pics of everyday stuff, I get my Mrs to take pics of my fights, I take pics in night clubs so I do all sorts. Need a lens that can cater for all that. Money aint flowing as good as I would like atm so would like to keep price down as much as I can.
 
Well unfortunately you won't be able to get all of that in one lens, so you're going to have to make a compromise somewhere.
 
I would look at the Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 lens for your fights. It's a bargain and using F2.8 and ISO 1600 should allow good low-light shots.
 
Do you still want the range from 18mm? If so, there's the 18-135mm you could look into. I don't know much about the lens, heard it mentioned a few times, so perhaps others can give better advice.
 
You will probably want long lens and big aperture then (i.e. f 2.8) to freeze the action (i.e. fast shutter speeds). That's normally a reasonable wedge of cash depending on how long the lens needs to be....

They are about £400 new or about £250 used. The 50-150mm F2.8 will provide you with an excellent low light lens.

Alternatively you can look at the Sigma 70-20mm F2.8, these cost about the same but aren't as sharp at F2.8 (where you will be using it most).

Don't look at the 18-135mm as you it won't perform well in low light.
 
Probably best to hold off and understand what you need from a lens - they are all compromises...

It's a very good general purpose lens but aperture wise it's not fast!

The sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX HSM is an excellent lens, and mine is pin sharp at 2.8. It certainly would be good cage side.

Depends if the op wants to spend £600 new or relative used...

Yeah, it just that the OP said range was more important. The 50-150mm (haven't heard much about this lens) or 70-200 2.8 would be a nice extension to the kit lens. Just depends on whether 50/70mm is wide enough. Or if you don't mind swapping to and from the kit lens.
 
Okay it sounds like you aren't a very rich person (if you'll forgive me bringing up the crass subject of finances) and neither am I. What i do is work with what i have and if i find that i'm regularly finding my gear falling short then i will then look at something that will cover the problem i have. If i can't afford it i read up/experiment with my technique.

So over time i am better in those situations anyway and then i re-asses, do i still need that bit of kit?

Okay so you want shots of cage fights, i've never been to one but i'm guessing you can be a bit away from the ring and it could be a bit dark?

Look at the shots you've taken, are you having to push up the iso? is your shutter speed getting a bit too low to catch the action? to hold the camera steady? Invest in a faster lens (wider aperture/lower f number) or learn to expose properly and how to hold the cam steady and time your shots better.

Are you a bit far from the action? Invest in a longer lens (more mm) or figure out how to get yourself closer

Some of these options will cost you a lot more than £200, some are free... go for the free ones first ;)

This is a good lens, but you're still gonna be in the same aperture range as your kit lens. I bought mine for £180 used.
