I have a Canon 400D and 17-85 lens, finding it difficult to take good shots indoors in poor light with this - flash makes it look unnatural. I'm no expert, but think I need something to let more light in? Generally taking photos of a toddler so needs to be fast. Was thinking of the 50mm f1.8 - would this do the trick?

Also I am thinking of getting a longer lens as like to take photos of equestrian sports and the current lens isn't long enough but takes nice shots if I can get close enough, what would you recommend? Budget not huge, sale/trade in value of the 17-85 plus £100 or so (but will buy second hand).

The 50mm F1.4 will let more light in, but bear in mind that if you shoot wide open, you will have a very small depth of focus.
 
Got a 500d with the fifty f1.8 and it is a cracking little lens and mega cheap,£50-£60 second hand or about £85 new so you wouldn't have to sell your other lens.

I've used the fifty lots taking shots of my baby girl who was born last sept. Some shots where out of focus using the wide open aperture due to the shallow depth of field. Those missed where outweighed by the keepers though.

Other lens to possibly think about is the tamron 17-50 f2.8, not quite as wide an aperture. But might work for you unless its really low light you are looking at.
 
the 55-250 IS would be long enough for equestrian, I'v done a couple of shows using mine and they're only £120 ish, picture quality is pretty good for a relatively cheap lens.
